I was busy all weekend building my closet/vault. Steel door, heavy duty bolts and reinforced door jambs, maximum security dead bolt, tamper proof hinges, and wireless alarm on top of the house alarm I already have.
My gaming PC is still broke so I'm using Photobucket editing software and my Daughter's camera and computer. Sorry if the pics turn out too big or angled wrong.

Just a few pics to show how it turned out. Its two levels with long rifles (91/30s, long barreled Mausers, etc. up top) and carbine length rifles below. I just have to put pegboard on the back of the door for my AK and pistols. Not saying how many rifles it holds but its already full. [shocked]
Now to figure out where all those magazines, extra slings, ammo pouches, cleaning kits, and assorted goodies I had stashed in the closet.[hmmm]
BTW... 1 cabinet gone, 3 left.[wink]

Outstanding collection, and very nice work. I'd love to have a similar set up, but can't convince the one who must be obeyed to give up closet.

It is already pretty full but there are some .22s and asst. rifles in there that I have for sale or will put up for sale.
Being able to walk in and pull one off the rack is a lot easier than taking half a dozen or so out of a cabinet to get the one you want that is burried in the back.[smile] Best part is... no more safe rash! All my sack up type sleeves have come off the ones with really mint stocks.

Really nice Ray. It's amazing that you could fit all of those into four cabinets. One of which is in my garage now, waiting to be moved to the basement! Nice to meet you and thanks.

What's all that brown stuff in there??? Is that wood??? Were guns really made with wood??? Where are all the black rifles? HMMMMMM.... LOL

Awesome collection!!!!

With all those choices, how can you possibly decide what to take with you to the range, and what stays home?

Thats happened before.[laugh] When I had them all in sheet metal cabinets I'd open each one, look inside, go back to the first one, and still not be able to decide and wind up sitting home playing Call of Duty 2 online instead of going shooting or at the least only grab a .22 rifle.

As Cross-X knows (because he's seen it), my system is to hang manila "shoe tags" on each rifle that identify each one. This is necessary because I keep them all in gunsacks inside the safe(s). Everytime I pull one out to shoot or clean, I record the date and (if shot) the number of rounds down range.

When it comes time to decide who goes to the dance, I check out which of my ladies has the fewest entries on her dance card, and off she goes! I usually bring two or three to every range session.

I like that alot. I don't quite have the collection that warrants that sort of record keeping but as it grows I may just steal your idea.

WOW! That system sounds WAY to complicated. When the mood hits me to go to the range, I just grab whatever falls out of the safe and hits me in the groin when I open the door.

Had a poster on the SKS boards ask about specifics for the build and I figured I'd share them here too in case anyone wants build info/ideas:

Heres a few more, naturally for here I focused on the SKS :

The bottom and top racks are 10" pine with a strip underneath to angle the boards. I used 1 1/2"x2 1/2" studs for legs for the upper rack's legs and used pressure treated 1"x2" pieces screwed into the wall studs for support in the back of the second level racks. The studs were cut at an angle to allow for proper shelf angle so the rifles would sit flush with no wobble.
I'm really green at carpentry but after I figured out what I was doing everything came together perfectly and worked out well. Only thing I might add is a strip of 1" across the stud legs to reinforce the bottoms of the top shelves to keep them from bowing over time. After all its only pine and with a dozen long barreled Mausers on one its probably gonna need some extra support.

Posting here I'd like to thank Dennis for the info on adding strips across the to shelves for support.[grin]

I'm thinking of turning this room into a vault. The "room" is actually an old nuclear bomb shelter under my driveway. It'll require a lot of work to clean up, and will probably require a dehumidifier and decent ventalation but it has potential. At the moment I don't have enough guns to warrant the work, but I'm looking at a nice AR-15 in the near future and a couple of shotguns for trap/skeet shooting.

The door way, or "the hatch"

Good idea, looks like it would be super secure. And If we have a SHTF with nukes your all set, just have to stock up on food too.[wink]

Yeah...not the best designed bomb shelter though. The access is through a 20 foot tunnel built in the basement. If Nashua ever got hit and the house fell into the basement then that bomb shelter would be your tomb. I think I'd prefer to take my chances on the outside.

I've thought of a few things: Wine cellar, S&M dungeon and armory. A poker/stogie room might work since my wife hates it down there and never goes in...
