Need a little help picking out a future heirloom.

Waiting until a little later you can also tailor your choice to what your kid ultimately prefers to shoot. For my son that would most likely be a 1911. For my daughter a 10/22. They shoot everything but have their favorites. However, I’m leaving each of them M1As with incredible vintage tiger striped stocks that I refinished as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Those will be their heirloom guns.

Wish I known this back when I made this thread. Would have made the decision easy and the thread pointless.

Springfield Armory makes a rimfire bolt action.

Had no idea until the other day. I’m out visiting the in-laws and saw one in a local shop. The wife and her family are born and raised Geneseo Il. Driven by their main building several times already.

i get the idea of an heirloom, but shouldn't it be something...well, special? like this is great great great grandpappy's springfield trapdoor he carried in whatever war. or a 7th generation gold pocket watch. i can hear the cries now from the recipients..."tell us again grandpa how you drove by the factory." just teasing, i'm sure it'll be valued and treasured by all who hold and use it. nice!

My son's first rifle was a Golden Boy at right around 8 years old, and we still love that rifle.
It's is so much fun that it is hard to leave behind when you go to the range.
There are so many reasons to like the rifle.
It is a beautiful rifle. Real American Walnut furniture, and brass lite receiver
It holds plenty of ammo
22 is cheap, and will ensure he can still afford to shoot it no matter what.
It eats everything, like everything. Long, short, shotshell.
It is easy to shoot and shoot well. The lever is super smooth and shooting steel out to 100 yards is like a carnival shooting gallery.

It's also readily available, brand new. In 20 years the dings and scratches will be your dings and scratches

Well, my father in law doesn’t own guns. My father is a recent gun owner and doesn’t have much or anything I don’t already have. I’m the one starting it.

The only thing I think I can add to sentiment is that is nice to have the rifle manufactured in the year of birth.

I would pair a revolver and lever action and put them in the safe.

Congratulations to you and the misses on the baby!

Here's one to consider with a HHH action 🤔
Guitar Gun.jpg
I found that in "growing up" a guitar for eye to brain to hand with foot, exercised a few more developing neural pathways than powder based guns. Air rifles with access to wooded areas was somewhat "fun", along with a kayak and fishing.

My boys are 2 and 4 right now. I have two CZ 457 Scouts hanging on the wall waiting for them.

These are beautiful rifles. Nice actions (60 degree bolt throw), beautiful wood stocks, threaded barrels. And best of all, when the boys outgrow the compact stocks, I'll drop the actions into full size stocks.

Put a Yo Dave trigger spring kit in them!
