Hello everyone. I have been racking my brain over what 9mm to buy in a week or so. I am a relatively new shooter, only had my LTC a few months. But I have been to the range several times. There are way too many choices out there. I've been searching armslist and found a few of the models I have been looking at, but I still haven't been able to pull the trigger. I am mainly looking at new/used models of the M&P 9, The HK VP9, the p2022, and considering a glock as well. Now that M&P has released the 2.0, I am tempted to wait until that comes available as well. I currently have a shield 45 that I love, and had a shield 9 before that. I preferably would like to keep things under 600 bucks (before taxes for new). Throw out your suggestions or advice, I am open to hear it.

Thank you
Zack

What will be the main uses for this gun? Carry, range or home defense? Answer that and we can help you out.

Edit for proper NES response. All of them!!

i like all your choices but i only have a m&p 9c myself that i've spent any time with. the vp9 is on my radar, but....the ones in your price range, mentioned here, are all top shelf, imho.

I knew I missed that! Mainly, its going to be a range gun. I want to get into 3 Gun sometime as well. But, I also don't want something huge that I couldn't throw in a good holster under my jacket during the colder months. Some people carry 1911s though, so maybe its not that big of an issue?

Hi Zack, and welcome! My answer only echoes the excellent advice I was given when I started out.

1. Narrow it down
2. Try them all
3. Go with the one you shoot best with.

So... To help with #1: I suggest you add the G19 and the Sig 320 to your list.

To help with #2: if you are a safe and sane person and live north shore MA or southern NH I can meet you and let you try out my favorites. PM me if interested.

Try (borrow) a wide assortment of firearms. The first firearm I purchased (P229), I love. Contrary to NES opinion, I hate Glocks. They just royally suck in my hands. The 1911 (45 ACP), however, is, by far, my favorite. Good Luck.

So you are looking for a firearm that can adapt from range to winter carry I would say a Glock 19.

This is all personal preference so my opinion can and will differ to others. I have a 1911 and could never imagine trying to carry the thing daily. Too big and she is a heavy girl. Again IMHO

A good holster fixes everything. Kydex makers are constantly updating what they're creating.

Baretta 92FS, Ruger SR9C, Glock G17 or G19. Here's why:

Baretta 92FS - good shooter plenty of preban standard capacity mags.
Ruger SR9c - good carry, great trigger right out of the box. Downside no preban mags
Glock G17/G19 - 1 hour of polish time leaves a decent trigger, Prebans available (pricey though). Reliable, reliable, did I mention reliable?

Go shoot all of them and select the one that fits best. The three you've selected aren't shabby either.

i have a p2022 and like it. half the price of most other sigs , but it had the best trigger than the p226, p239........ and others that was in the store.

It is winter carry size for me @ 190# although i have smaller guns that i carry now and havnt carried the 2022 in a few years.

it was my starter gun.

I used it for uspsa for a while. it is range worthy for sure.

I must admit that i may have the signess!

I carry an M&P9c as my EDC with a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster. I got this before the Shield came out. I don't mind the double stack vs. the slimmer Shield. It did take an Apex DCAEK to turn it into a shooter.

I have a full-size Sig Sauer 1911 in .45ACP, with both an IWB and shoulder holsters. I have a .22LR conversion kit that I can put on this.

I have a revolver ('new model' S&W K frame model 66-8). Fullsize revolver shoots .38spl and .357 magnum. Great range / HD gun.

My wife's P238 would be my "pocket gun" should I ever go that route.

*for me* they suit most of my handgun needs and I'm happy with all my choices.

If I was to add another handgun, I'd probably go for a full-size 9mm, perhaps with a DA/SA trigger (i.e. Sig or 92FS). Or Perhaps one of the swanky new models with a slide pre-cut for a micro red dot sight. M&P2.0 would be on my short list, for sure.

Thank you, I would like to get my hands on one to feel out for sure. Went to the local store and they didn't have any in stock at the moment. Doh!

M&P Range Kit in 9mm

A great package deal, for a great price! (click above) [laugh2]

Yes, I have seen this on their site. That is where I got my shield! Nice people there and excellent prices.

Thank you for the advice and offer! I am on the south shore. Ill keep this in mind, you are very kind. Im not sure of any places around me that allow rentals.

VP9. No need to tweak it out of the box. Shoots everything, great trigger. Inexpensive (expensive mags though). Takes a bit to get used to the mag ejection but I actually prefer it now..

Found one on armslist, very tempted to pull the trigger. Comes with a holster.

In my opinion if it is mainly a range gun and for 3-gun down the road, I would go for a Glock 17. I just bought one for 3-gun and love it. The benefit is that you can find pre-ban mags that hold 17 or 19 rounds +1 in the chamber.

I don't find it to big too carry. I comfortably carry mine all day AIWB and I'm not a big guy - 5' 9" and 170 lbs.

Good luck with your search.

That was going to be my next suggestion. Absolutely love my 17, but would be impossible for me to carry even during winter months.

That's what I will be using for upcoming comps.

I have a 9c from before the Shield came out and a 92FS. Love them both but, the M&P does require some trigger work before it's usabl (NIB had a 16lb trigger pull before I had the Apex kit put in). Buying used, someone might have already done that for you.

Heard a lot of good things about the SR9, particularly it's out of box usability.

The 92 is a great range gun but I wouldn't want to regularly carry it.

I've passed on Glocks due to the difficulty finding them in MA without a huge upcharge. The deals/sellers are out there if you can find them.

you don't have the carry 1911 then .. the emp 9mm is light .

now my SA .45 op which is prob 43 oz unloaded plus another 10 or so for the light.

I have M&P Shield, Beretta 92fs and Canik TP9sf. All are fine shooting 9mm firearms. Of the 3, I shoot the most accurately with the shorter barrel Shield. Go figure. Other 2 are full size, fun to shoot but are too big to EDC. Raw Dog Tactical makes a nice IWB holster for the Shield.
Canik is my most recent 9mm purchase, saw it (with range kit) for $299, couldn't pass it up. So far issues or complaints. Only few hundred rounds so far.
Beretta is a tack driver. Fun to shoot and never any issues with it either. Put probably 3000 rounds down range with her.
Happy shooting!

where did you buy the tp9sf for 299$ thats a great price

Yes, I will gladly pick one up for 299. Hook me up haha. Thanks everyone for the good advice so far. I am working on narrowing it down. The 92FS is a really neat gun, but they seem to be a little out of my range? Canik has made it to the list and I think I dropped the M&P.

Shop around. You can find a Beretta 92 for under $600.00. Another vote for the Beretta. Endless accessories for them. Wilson Combat parts, triggers, grips, mag releases, safeties....

Range gun, 9mm, under $600 I would have to second the 92fs which would meet what you are looking for. You might be able to find a deal on a used 226 which is also a good option. Ruger has a 9mm 1911 that you might also be able to find used around that price, but they are relatively new to MA so I doubt there will be many out there.

Shooting Supply in Westport had Canik range kits for $299. Great little shop. They post often on NES on the dealer classified page.
