New shooter needs reliable handgun, any suggestions

I've heard lots of good things about the Hi-Point 9mm or .45 pistols.

Yeah, they're cheap/inexpensive.. but hey, if they work... they work... Right?

I haven't shot one, so my opinion is solely based off of watching YouTube videos and reading reviews.

In a revolver the S&W 686 would be my cholice - one can use either full power 357 Magnum loads or plink with 38 Special.
In a semi auto I would recommend a 9mm either a Glock 17 or a S&W M&P - equally relaible and accurate but with diffrent ergonomics.

I would say get a Glock but there is one thing...

Are you left-handed? If yes, get an M&P9. Affordable, even with the corrections, FULLY ambidextrous, reliable and S&W's customer service is excellent.

If you're right-handed and don't mind over-paying, certainly buy a Glock.

CZ 75B. $492 at Buds.

Yeah.... Best bet is to try as many handguns as you can, a rental place is a great place to start. I am a 9mm fan, and love the Beretta 92 FS. That being said it is not for everyone, It is ultra Reliable, Easy to field strip/Clean, but it is often considered heavy and large in the grip for alot of shooters.

To the op, where are you located? I am sure there are a few members on this forum myself included that would be willing to let you try out a few different guns. I have a hi-point 9mm and a glock 19 as well as a few others. if I can help you out pm me sometime. I am in NH

I second the motion on a 4" .38/.357 revolver. Smith and Wesson 686 or Ruger GP100, your choice. Either one will be in your collection forever. (Yes, you will end up with a collection.)

I started with a Ruger 22/45. Nice gun. real accurate. Cheap to shoot. Then a Ruger P345. What's not to like about a .45 that is light and again accurate? Then a Ruger GP100. Ahhhh....I have found my Nirvana. No more chasing brass for reloading. Will shoot anything from poofy .38s to "What the hell was that?!" .357 loads. Mild to wild. And Accurate.

Then again, 9mm sure is cheap if you don't reload......
i second the p345. great gun. fun to shoot and very accurate (right out of the box}. i have over 3k rounds through it with no problems.

Look no further than the Sig 229 in 9mm. It meets all your criteria. It was my first handgun and I still love shooting it.

Beretta 92fs is another good choice.
