Anyone know what it is? If it works I'd rather carry something that is used by the state. I plan to check with my local police department as well.

Why should it matter?

Carry what works the best in your gun- don't base your decision on what
some PD does or does not do. I've -never- heard of this becoming a real
issue in a true SD case. Some people that huff too much ayoob fumes
may think it makes a difference but I've never seen any proof. I think even
ayoob has said that as long as the ammo is commercial and you have a lot
number/box it came in to back it up thats about all you really need.

Let's let this old wives tale/urban legend die a quick death, already.

The only reason I could think of why there would be a difference would perhaps be higher quality control and/or better waterproofing?

Any defensive handgun ammo worth buying has sealed primers.
The vast majority of "LE ammo" is commonly available to joe public.
EG- if you buy a box of speer gold dots the ones LEOs get are no different
than the ones you can buy at the local gun store.

Thanks for the feedback. I talked briefly to an officer in another state and he said that's what he would recommend. So I was curious but if it's a story and doesn't matter then that's fine with me. I should probably know better than listen to such stuff anyway.

If you buy a standard factory brand (Gold Dots, Hydra Shoks, HSTs, Golden Sabers, Rangers...) you shouldn't need to worry about legal ramifications. Those are all commonly used LE rounds.

We bought our ammo from whoever had the state contract. If was nothing special and the same as sold to anyone over the counter. We carried W-W SXT 147 gr in 9mm and 165 gr. in 40S&W. For my personal use that wasn't the best available but budgets rule a lot in government.
