check the rife's "billboard" (it's engraved labeling). Does it have "Norinco" in it? Or "made in China"? You'll also find import labeling on the rifle as well.
your typical norinco that you'll find in the US (the most common, anyways) are mak-90's or NHM-90's. If you see a type 56 (any variant) or even a 84, they're all very easily differentiated from other AKM rifles. Familiarize yourself with pictures of them. Then familiarize yourself with pictures of other common AK rifles like WASR's. I'm assuming that's your primary concern: buying a "Made in China" ak and getting a Romanian
I had a MAK90 I traded off a few years ago. They are well built and reliable. My buddy had a Romanian and when we compared the two as far as workmanship, finish and shootability, there was no comparison. That Romanian had horrible trigger slap and just felt generally junky when handling and shooting. I'll probably be in the market for another MAK90 someday. Too bad I won't find one for what I paid back in '02... $300.
Maybe he is referring to an "unbanned" mak-90 or something similar. Basically the folks who buy all the correct furniture for it and build it up to look like the pre-import ban guns. I've never heard of anyone trying to pass one off as an original though.
You could always build a Saiga for about $500 total. Much easier and it is after all a Russian AK47.
I'd recommend a Saiga build to anyone before taking on an AK parts build because it gives you a better understanding of the rifle. I will eventually build a parts gun but having done a few Saiga variants, I'm glad I got my feet wet on them first.
