So I just recently picked up a sweet 45acp revolver and it came with 5 metal moon clips. It was a real PITA to load them and I basically destroyed one trying to get the rounds out of the damn thing. So first off I picked up some plastic moon clips, which by the way is significantly easier to load. Though they are a bit flimsy and if I rushed loaded them I'm sure a round could easily fall off. So who can share the trick to loading and unloading metal moon clips? I seen there is a tool, but figure there must be an easier "no cost" way to do it. Or maybe I'm wrong...... According to my wife, that is more then likely..... [thinking]

I hate them, went with 45 autorim instead so I don't have to deal with them. But I've heard people say they use a pencil for removing the empty shells from it. As for loading it, I found that sort of rolling the rounds into the clip helped instead of trying to go straight in.

When I had a revolver that used moon clips I found them to be a PITA also. The only way I found to remove the shells by hand was to grasp the clip firmly in one hand and with the other hand twist or rotate them out of the opening.

You could tell when I sold that little sucker when the cuts and abrasions on my fingers started going away.

Get a piece of copper pipe or PVC 1/2" dia cut out a section of the pipe so that it engages the moon clip and twist the case should pop right off. I have a 45 acp and 10 mm revolvers and I purchased a couple of different tools that worked well in demoozing the clips.

If you wouldn't mind could you elaborate what exactly "engages the moon clip" entails?

Moonclips are awesome. Get a tool like this. Revolver supply used to sell something like it.

They have a new one that I haven't tried. Donna seems to like hers (see post below). If you were using one for 38/357 I'd recommend the one from BMT. Their 45 isn't as slick. 45 clips are cheap and sturdy, no reason not to have 50-100 of them and load/unload them at home. The 38/357 clips are fragile and expensive ($2-7 each!) and I still have 100+ of them.

Uniquetek sells a golf club demooner. For 45 ACP you can make one out of 1/2" copper pipe very easily.

There's a tool.

But it's 2016. Just use the Rimz plastic ones. They come in two types, one more rigid than the other. I agree they feel flimsy, but I've been using the same clips for years (both types) with no breakage.

Cut the tubing so the edge/wings of the moon clip fits the portion of the pipe you cut away. Essentially what you want to do is cut the pipe so it has a step that the moon clip can rest against it then twist twist the moon clip and the case pops off.

i use he ruger moon clips for my redhawk 45 colt/45 acp revolver. don't seem to have much of a problem unloading them. the first one is kinda a pita but after that they come out fairly easy, i just roll them out, careful to never twist or you'll screw up the clip.

Loading and unloading moonclips is a learned skill and gets easier and easier with practice. I just bought the new 'pocket moonclip holder' from revolver supply and love it. New_PMCT_1__60043.1472409822.500.659.jpg I use it with my 38sp. Wasn't totally happy with their original one for 38's. And unlike semi-autos, I can have all the ammo I need for a match loaded up the night before. For unloading, I use this https://www.dillonprecision.com/moon-clips-b-demooner-tool_8_30_25111.html

I've seen guys at the range using home made rigs made from 1/2in copper pipe. If you want to go Cadillac get something from TK customs, they modify almost any revolver to be loaded with clips and also the tools that go with them.

I hate moon clip. a PITA is an understatement.

It's not really a PITA if you have the correct tools ot manage moon clips. Sorry, but anyone who loads and unloads moon clips without tools is someone whose elevator doesn't go all the way to the top.

the trick is to load up about 25 moonclips before you get to the range and remove the casings over a few beers when you get home.

I had the Dillon tool it didn't hold up very well. Go to www.mooncliptool.com awesome tool has held up much better than the Dillon and he's in Plimpton ma.

This, I have a S&W 625JM and I have 2x moon clip tools. I like moon clips and after about 10 - 20 times loading one it becomes an easy evolution. I preload about 15 clips before I hit the range.

Go to Home Depot and buy a thick dowel to fit in the middle of the moon clip, this can be used to keep the clip stable while you pop cartridges into it, when unloading the empty cases put the dowel in the middle of the moon clip to hold it steady while inserting a 4 inch carriage bolt into the empty cartridge to pop it out of the moon clip. This will cost you 15 minutes and $5 at Home Depot and you can load and unload the cartridges very quickly once you get the hang of it

The real B-word are half-moon clips. I've got a Fitz'd Colt 1917 that will NOT take full moon clips. It binds. Halfs fit great (unless they are slightly bent - I'd like to make this Colt a BIT more loose) but are a bear to load and unload.

Wish RIMZ made half-moon clips. :(

I bought a couple of these from Amazon. Simple and Cheap at $7.62. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U3UQYW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They work just fine and no futtsing around building my own.

Get the tool and a bag full of extras. Load a hundred or so and shoot what you feel like. Then remove the spent brass and repeat.

They don't. But scissors do.

Just snip the Rimz in half.

I have an S&W 627-8 which came with some moon clips, I used them a few times but really don't care for them, and they're really not necessary anyway unless I'm trying to fire the obsolete .38 AMU rounds.
I did find that some brands of ammo are far easier to seat into the moon clip than others, which is due to the width of the groove above the case head, not all ammo manufacturers use the exact same case dimensions.

It's actually the width of the groove AND the diameter of the undercut. If you look at the SAAMI spec neither of these are dimensioned so every manufacturer is different so moonclips are brass specific. Federal and Remington brass work very well with revolver supply's .025" nickel plated moon clips.
