Going through the training now to prepare for the test. Hoping to take it this month. Any advice on the best handhelds available today? Planning on a purchase when the Black Friday sales hit. Thanks

I have no experience with Ham Radio. But I do have an FCC radio operator permit from my days of flying airplanes.

I'm a Yaesu guy, and anything from them, Icom, or Kenwood is a good place to look. I'd throw Alinco in that mix, too. For the first one I would not bother with APRS or any digital modes like Fusion/Dstar/DMR.

Everyone always wants to upgrade their antenna right away. I usually recommend these. I now buy them with BNC connectors and get an adapter for the radio to BNC. Then you can swap antennas around no problem. I wish manufacturers would just use BNC.
