Open Season On Bald Eagles

they're overpopulated.

It's a bird, not some sacred shrine of patriotism. Ben Franklin wanted the official bird to be a turkey.

I'm willing to bet most eagles are smart enough not to fly into the turbines.

This story is contrived horseshit, Obama being a total piece of shit notwithstanding.

Overpopulated ???

Over populated? Bald and Golden Eagles?

Come again?

They were damn near extinct just 30 years ago. Had 2 hovering over my back yard just a few weeks ago. Beautiful sight.

Now Hawks, got too damn many of those. They get a chicken at least twice a year.

They've been on the endangered list so long they've sprung back like crazy....."overpopulated" might be a bit of an exaggeration but not by much. They're thoroughly thriving.

The ONLY reason they still need protected status is because the moment it gets removed from the list every toothless hillbilly in the country will want to go bag one.

But pretending like a wind farm is going to decimate them is a retarded concept.

That is true.

big ****ing deal. We need energy. Up until recently, we have been buying it all from the midleeast and essentially funding terrorists. If we can frack and get gas, put up solar farms, wind farms, and pump local oil, and tell Saudi Arabia to **** off....then that is GREAT NEWS. Unless the frigin eagles are about to go extinct, I say survival of the fittest. THey should be able to see these gian windmills and avoid them! Maybe they just need to shine lights on the blades at night or something like that, or make some sort of noise that the eagles can hear and avoid.

The article devoid of some relevant facts.
One being , how many are actually killed by the turbines yearly?
Is it 2 or 200?
Seems somewhat relevant.

Agreed id be more on board bashing the dude if a there was an easy way to figure out how many are actually killed. Methinks a jumbo jet wing doing 170 doesn't leave a lot of bird. And b if they reported how many they actually kill a year now

The f'in windmills are only built because of the tax subsidies and then the thing they're best at is killing birds. They sure don't generate much useful power. But they are truly excellent bird killers.

They suck, seem to be idle most of the time and the flicker is irritating. Take the subsidies away and they will disappear.

I read last year that over the lifespan of a turbine, only one year of it is actually "Free" power.
The damn things cost so much to build and maintain.
After working around a couple of them at accounts for the last couple of years I know I'd do anything to keep one from being build close to where I live.
The noise and what RHJJ said about the "Flicker" would drive you insane.

The one down the street from me failed after 3 years, right after the warranty expired. Costs 300K to fix and 25K a month in lost revenue. Its be motionless for a year... money well spent

You would not believe how typical a story that is. The only thing that keeps (some of) them turning is a massive suck of tax dollars.

The future of wind power

Doesn't surprise me at all. I work in Gloucester and have friends that live there. The town decided to approve three wind turbines a few years ago. The turbines make an awful sound when they are actually running. The majority of the time they are standing idle. It is not the future of energy by any means.

It's more than just a few eagles that are sacrificed for this PC dream.

A 2013 study found that 573,000 birds and 888,000 bats are killed every year by wind turbines — a figure 30 percent higher than the federal government estimated in 2009. These deaths have likely increased as wind power capacity increases across the country.Apr 20, 2015

Bald eagles are of "least concern", apparently.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bald_eagle

As of 2007.

Over the last 40 years, we got rid of the DDT and started taking a little better care of our bays and estuaries, and they bounced back.

Anyone actually thinks wind turbines are going to kill thousands of bald eagles (and that the environmental lobby wouldn't have been screaming this fact from the rafters if true) is delusional (or an oil company shill).
