i dont belong to a range, but i have been to AFS a few times to shoot. What are some other ranges in the Shout Shore area that a re good and open to the public?

damn few.

Support the sport, find a local club that's to your liking....most clubs' annual dues are going to save you $$$ when compared to a "pay-to-shoot" facility. Some require boots-on-the-ground involvement ( read work parties) some encourage it, some meerly hope.

Just my .02

AFS is the only one in Southeastern MA. Bob's Tactical is in Salisbury. S&W is in Springfield. Manchester Firing Line is in Manchester, NH. And that's about it.

Join a club. It's cheaper and the company is better.

i plan on it once i get my license (been 7 weeks and still waiting) but until then im just gonna work on my skills at public ranges i guess

Clubs often take a while to join. You have usually have to go to a monthly meeting. Some then require that you attend a range rules orientation. I suggest that you get that started now, or you will be whining about it after you get your LTC.

while public ranges have their "niche" - i will not be caught dead at one in the near future. also, you can network easier at a local gun club... along with NES, you'll be golden!

Agree on both counts, however I have heard that there are some clubs that won't let you join until you have an LTC (assuming you are joining with the intention of shooting). I was told that Hopkinton is this way (by a member), but never verified since I decided on Harvard anyway.

Most clubs don't require that as some towns have required that you have a club membership before getting an ltc

Some clubs have a middle ground. They'll take you on as a provisional member until you have your LTC. Once you have license in hand, you go back and become a full member.

As far as "open to public" some clubs have open to public events such as
Trap shooting/skeet/sporting clays
Hanson rod and gun Hanson mass
Sportsmen Association Pembroke
Holbrook sportsman club holbrook
Plymouth gun club plymouth

Hanson also has several open to public events check the web sight
Also there is also the CMP shoot every 1st saturday 9am and every 3rd synday 1pm. It is very informal 35.00 can get you 60 rounds 30-06 or 30 carbine gun and targets
Guns are limited so get there early if you intend to use club guns. 5.00 for targets only. Like I said its a very informal clinic type shoot made for beginers. most guns are ok as long as you are shooting the format 100 yards seating, prone, kneeling and standing.

A few dates I know of
April 10th old fashion 22 shoot basically iron sighted basic 22s boltactions, lever actions, non tricked out target guns...basically. info mike 781 293 6493
April 17th ham trap shoot 1-4pm fun shoot and is basically a lucky bird shoot. Green targets are thrown at random most green targets wins ties are decided by most overall wins I believe cost is 10.00 ?

You can join on a club even without an LTC, at a lot of the smaller fish + game clubs. There is probably some half decent club you can get into within an hour radius of where you live with dues under $100/yr.

I don't think anyone at Leicester R&G (aside from me, maybe) has their LTC [laugh]

Back when I was at Fitchburg R+G (Which is really in Ashby) it seemed like more of the members had a "License to Clubhouse, ATV, and Fish" than an FID or an LTC. [grin] Nothing against the club, it's just that "gun guys" are probably under 25% of the member base.

Sounds about right. I'm reasonably convinced that 90% of the Leicester members who DO have an FID/LTC still have their pre-98 "lifetime" FIDs, and nothing else.

Some clubs will let you join, might even waive any initiation fees or other requirements, if you were to have some cool toys to share with the club once a year or so. Front end loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, bucket trucks etc. Everybody gets a "Tonka Woodie" when you got those kinda tools to share for the club's benefit.
