Thinking about getting some work done on the P226, what Sig call's their Action Enhancement (factory smooth out the trigger pull). I also need to move the mag release to the other side and maybe thinking aout the short reset.

Any local (Woburn, MA) smiths that can do the first/all items? I know FS or similar can do the last two. I might not be able to do it all at once and it does not seem that cost effective to ship back and forth to Sig. Suggestions?

Thanks,
J

I would go to the factory in NH. You could probably drop the gun off yourself. SIG custom gunsmiths are few and far between. I sent my 226 to Bruce Gray in OR. The work was fantastic but expensive, and the shipping was $180 round trip via Fedex.

I've been to the Sig Pro Shop in Epping and have seen customers dropping off and picking up their pistols that have had work done. Some pretty impressive stuff.

The best way to enhance a Sig is to sell the gun and buy something that suits you better. Or get it out to Bruce Gray and prepare to pay a bit.

Call the up first. If you are a MA resident, they may refuse to lighten the trigger pull.

AEP won't even really reduce the weight, just gets rid of some of the friction in the pull.

I bet they will refuse to install SRT for MA people, though, that wouldn't surprise me at all. [rolleyes]

Send it to Sig! Sign up for specials on their site. I got an email for the action package/SRT/crown and polish feed ramp, an some other stuff for around $200. I think the shipping was the most. They will do the trigger even for Mass. Well worth it!

I bought springs from Bruce Gray and then polished the trigger parts using directions I found online. Whole thing took me about an hour and the trigger is a huge improvement and as good as any pro job....

The Sig factory is the place to go. My experience with Gray Guns Inc was a less than satisfactory.

I paid over $600 for work and shipping total. It required 2 trips and was still not right. On the second trip to him, he offered to give me one of his mag releases at no charge as an apology for the problem. When I got my credit card statement, he had charged me for it plus the mag release was not properly fitted to the gun and dropped mags when the gun was being fired. For a carry gun, totally unacceptable.

When I e mailed and told him I was not at all happy with the work, he went into defense mode and basically his attitude was "How dare you question my work". Gray made no attempt to make anything right and just kept saying he gave a life time warranty on work send it back. That is great if he pays shipping both ways but he does not so I decided to cut my losses at that point and have it repaired correctly.

I ended up sending it to Sig to be straightened out and now it is back to being the best gun I own. All GGI parts have been removed, the factory parts replaced, Short reset, short trigger and the action tuned. I am very happy with the work completed by the factory.

Learn from my mistake. In this instance, you do not always get what you pay for. Sig does good work.

If you just want to spend money, look at TJ customs.

Guys, thanks, looks like sig factory is the way to go. Mike, I agree on fit issues. I'm feeling proficient with my sig and looking to make it just that much sweeter. And besides, it's my first and there's some sentimental value (or maybe way too much invested in prebans and holsters [thumbsup])

I know this thread's a few days old, but I have a couple of tips that might help a bit.

In terms of getting an Action Enhancement Package (AEP) done on your P226, how great it turns out is definitely a factor of who does it. It's really a judgement and skill thing. I've had the armorer at Sig Academy (Brett) do both my P226 and P229 and they are sweet. He's very talented. In addition to the standard AEP stuff, he also polished the feed ramp for good measure and a few random components (like the part of the barrel that you see through the opening in the slide when the action is closed) to make things nice and tidy.

They charge $160... Bring it up to Sig Academy and drop it off, and in a day or two they'll call you can tell you to pick it up.

BTW, it's best to have a several hundred rounds through the gun before doing the AEP... it helps show where there's wear or drag on the action.

They can also do the SRT for you if you want... it really is a 5 minute procedure. I have no idea what they charge for that.

I don't work at Sig, but I've had lots of fun training there.

Lots of good advice, thanks. I've taken a bunch of classes up there and really like what they have going on.

I also called earlier this week and they (customer service) asked that I not drop it off as the armorers are at the factory not at the academy - different locations. As a few others mentioned to try the pro-shop, I'll ping them and see whats up. I hate going in that pro-shop and seeing all the goodies that are next to impossible to procure in these parts...
