Passed my Technician Today

Been keeping an eye out for a price drop on the FT-891. HRO started their pre-black Friday sale this morning so I pulled the trigger. I already have a 49:1 transformer, coax, wire, power supply & battery ready and waiting. I also picked up an inovato while they are still available.

Picked up a Yaesu FT-DX10 from DX Engineering on sale this week. As well an Astron linear power supply.
I made a POTA Performer antenna a few weeks ago. I had it tuned for 15 meters.
It was an awesome day of learning about the radio, it's filters and settings.
Had my first DX with it. A nice guy from Chicago. He even verified it on QRZ!
Farthest QSO was a guy near Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Got to hunker down and start learning cw, the radio settings and all the stuff required for it.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and enjoy the holiday season! 73!

The next radio I want is the FT-891 for travel and Pota. Congrats Gerbs54!

Just passed my general today. Still no clue what’s going on. Just listening mostly to the local repeater and a couple nets that run there. That and a couple SDR’s I found I like.

Got it mostly for comms with family who are “just far enough” that I can’t reach them with anything else. Plus the Mrs is a psuedo-prepper so she was the initial push to get the ball rolling.

Now I gotta figure out what kind of rig I want to start with and how much it will cut into my ammo budget. But in no rush.

Start thinking about antennas and where you're going to put them before radios. Radios are the easy, fun part. Lack of good antennas and placement is ball crushing.

Yup, I'm aware. I have a few options where I am and it's a fairly high elevation relative to the rest of the surrounding area. Also less than a mile from a repeater linked around the state so may have some fun with that too. I may just string a dipole up between a couple trees out back to start with.

DX Engineering and HRO both have winter sales going on, the FT-891 is $50 off at either site which covers the tax and shipping insurance.
