Why do you do that?

I know how to make sure virtually any firearm is unloaded (while still assuming its loaded, according to the safety RULES) , but I haven't owned a lot of guns in my life and I'd like to learn.

Why do you put a Pen/Pencil inside the trigger guard?

What you may be referring to is a technique used (more with revolvers than autos) to keep a handgun from lying flat on the surface of whatever it is lying on, when photographing it.

Taken from the March acquisitions thread.

Looks like it's in front to me, huh Scrivener?

It's to prop up the gun for display/picturetaking. The few times I've taken
pictures of handguns, I usually just resorted to propping it up by putting something
underneath it on the non-visible side.

Mystery revealed.

Except why it's not behind the trigger, for a tighter fit. [wink]

Some people will use a shotgun shell instead of a pen/pencil.

It might seem trivial, but IMO, using a shotgun shell seems more fitting when taking a picture.
