I fired off about 40 rounds of PMC 223 recently. The ammo shot well and appeared very consistant. However, I noticed a strong ammonia smell from the chamber after firing the PMC. I also shot Prvi, S&B and Ultramax at the same time, all shot okay but none had the ammonia smell.

Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone have an idea what causes the odor?

It's probably the powder. I get a similar smell from the Brown Bear 7.62x39 ammo I shoot. It's definitely a little off-putting.

I fired ten rounds of it today and smelled nothing of the sort. It did make a bigger flash than any factory ammo I've shot in my AR to this point.

I fired off some Privi 5.56 NATO (M193) on Friday and I got a strong ammonia smell from that... reminded me of sweets bore cleaner or something. So apparently whatever powders a lot of these companies are using, when it burns up it releases ammonia? Wasn't really an issue unless the wind was blowing towards my shooting position, then I would get a sort of wake up call from it. [laugh]
