I'm considering buying a Glock 22 police trade in. I want something to leave in the bedside safe and I found a place online where I can buy one for $330 shipped for a Gen 3. I'll have to pay the transfer fee but it still seems like a good price. I just wanted to know what people's experiences have been with police trade in pistols? Is it a smart idea to purchase a new magazine to replace the used one?

Most police trade-ins are usually good deals, are mechanically sound, but frequently are rough looking in the cosmetics department displaying signs of wear but they don't get fired much and have usually been serviced by factory trained departmental armorers.

Always good to have a couple spare mags, but test the mag out before relying on it as im sure your thinking it got loaded once and sat on the cops belt for 10 or so years and the springs are worn. Just put plenty of range time in with it to make sure it loads properly.

I bought a glock 22 from 4 seasons a while back that was police trade in definitely some holster wear but good gun! I've got a few hundred rounds through it and no issues as expected! Sometimes you luck out and cool add ons like mine had night sites and also had been recently inspected by glock. Good luck!

It can be a crap shoot. I'm our department armorer, and you have some guys that maintain their guns, and some that don't. I assume you're not going to be able to look at it before you buy it? They are really simple to tear apart, so I would just do that when you get it. Call Glock with the serial number to see how old it is, and maybe replace a part or two. I know that I had to replace all of our extractors recently, and a couple of slide stop springs. Definitely with budgets nowadays, they aren't going to have a crapton of rounds through them, unless they shoot on their own.

All sensible recommendations.... I'm not concerned about the finish, it's a Glock and it's only gonna look so good.... [rofl] 5-0 is right, with budgets being tight, they probably will have a low round count... Does the same thinking apply to spending the money on replacement parts? My plan was to purchase the G22, add a Crimson Trace laser and the new light guard (when it comes out), and pick up a 22 round factory Glock magazine for my reload. As it won't be a carry gun I'm not concerned about the size or holster fit.

For short money you can send it off to Glock if you find any issue with it for an "over haul" (bring it up to spec), even a refinish if looks are important. I think it's $45 ??

So I think it's a pretty decent price and the risk for a money pit is pretty low [grin]

mags should be fine. springs that are compressed and uncompressed over and over again wear out--springs that are simply compressed should be just fine.

but spare mags are always good for any other number of reasons besides that. [cheers]

i have a police trade in Hk usp 45 , and police trade in usp 45c both guns were a great buys each had low round counts but with some holster wear but i do not regret buying them at all.

Bought a Sig 229 that was a police trade in from the Springfield PD. It had some cosmetic scratches, but has been rock solid in functionality. It came in 40 S&W and had a 357 Sig bbl as well. I bought a BarSto 9mm drop in bbl for it as well. Basically is a fully functioning 3 caliber semi auto. Great gun that I've put thousands of rounds through without issue. I'd buy another PD trade in any day.

It begs the question of why police departments replace these guns that aren't worn out. Seems like a waste of tax money.

I just picked up a G19 from VA Beach Sherrif's Office. Looks like it got used to qualify and spent the rest of the time in a holster. Some minor frame dings, that's all the wear on the gun. Ex police guns are a bargain.
