The ATF has stated that angled grips do not make an AOW from a handgun

That's not a vfg either. AFGs, hand stops etc don't count as a vfg.

But vertical means 90deg (perpendicular) to the mount.

Even 0.1-89.99 degrees is NOT vertical

There's an ATF letter on it somewhere, someone asked them if things like AFG/AFG2 were vfg, ATF said no. Letter is probably as old as the original AFG is though.

At first I was a little confused but 18 USC 921 lumps pistol in with the term “firearm” which is extremely broad.

The correct way is length times diameter plus weight over girth divided by angle of the tip squared. If that is at 26.5 OAL and your Length Of Arc (LOA) is still within 5 minutes you should be good to go.
