Project Modern Mosin: Complete

The drums are just about as fun as the guns.

Quick Update: I began doing some light sanding on the stock. The improvement in feeding rounds was obvious, but not fixed completely. I should have some time next week finish clearance adjustments to the stock. This time I will use a dremel as a decent amount of material needs to be removed.

Update: Finally got a chance to work on the Mosin. I had to do a considerable amount of material removal. I used the original stock as a guide for where to remove said material. I am now able to feed rounds into the magazine. I will be hitting the range on Wednesday. Pics to follow.

Cool project. In the past I would have said "Man don't do all that shit to an old milsurp like that!" But I've lightened up a bit now and no longer give a damn what others do to their guns. Now if it were an all original PU sniper or something, I might think you're crazy. But your basic Mosin is by no means endangered.

Let us know how she shoots!

Looks good but that scope looks a little high for a proper cheek weld. You will probably need some type of riser or pad.

That would have been my thought. How did it work out?

Also, how did you mount the rail - did you mount it to the rear sight mount, or did you mount it more securely?

But your basic Mosin is by no means endangered.
Well... from what I've heard, they ARE running low. Plenty of crazy Americans are buying up these Russian antiques... [laugh] I know; I'm one of 'em!

The sight mount is a rear sight replacement. It is made by UTG, but I have had no issues with loss of zero in the past. I am still evaluating this setup and may move to a Rock Solid mount in the future.

M91/30s are by no means endangered. There were millions made and there are plenty of people out there who would never dream of modifying them. I agree if it was in any way a rare piece it would remain factory spec.

Honestly my time is worth more than money. I just have too many projects going to make my own parts. My options are a Rock Solid Mount and traditional scope or stick with the current setup and add the cheek piece.

Hello,

A while back I received Brass Stacker's original buttstock ammo carrier, by Rick Lowe. I was impressed.

A couple weeks ago I received a 2.75x scout scout scope and mount. I installed it and did a short video review on it. (I am SmithSights on YouTube should you wish to see it.)

Yesterday I received one of their newer versions of the buttstock ammo carrier for use with 'scopes.

You can see the raised cheek rest.

The loops take five loose rounds for topping off, while the pouch takes one stripper clip of ammo.

The back is signed by Rick.

A comparison to my faithfully serving ammo holder that I've used for a while now.

I am left-handed, and this is their left-handed version. The right-handed version is a mirror image.

While it's more friendly to the sizes of the Chinese knockoff stripper clips and the original Finnish stripper clips (one of the latter is shown), I did try it with a Russian stripper clip and it works fine!

I will need to put the 'scope back on here and give this a try. I can't imagine it being anything but excellent. Having grown up on 'scopes and only recently determined to shoot really well with iron sights, I am comfortable with a variety of cheek welds for 'scopes, including both American and European styles.

I was having to use a floating European-style weld before. Now I can use the American cheek weld with the rest!

Regards,

Josh
