16in Heavy Carbine Upper Receiver/Barrel Assembly
Bushmaster's 16" chrome lined, heavy carbine barrels - headspaced, test fired, and ready for use - include short carbine handguards.
Part No: BURA3B 16

OK....so I missed out on the weekly Bushmaster FALL sale for the gas piston upper.- this week's item ( listed at beginning of this post) ... this upper caught my eye..

Any AR15 experts with info, opinions, etc. of pros/cons of the "heavy carbine barrel upper?...?

Thanks for the help...

i have heavy barrels on all my ar's...my first one had a pencil barrel...after putting a few 30 round mags down range at a sustained rate you could cook a steak on that thing!

Opinions? Sure, I've got one. Doesn't everybody? [wink]

Anyway, my preference in AR carbines is for lighter barrels - but it's just my preference. I know plenty of shooters that prefer the feel of the weight out in front that the heavy barrel gives. A heavier barrel will give you less muzzle jump than a lighter profile.

My preference of the uppers on the sale page would be the 16" Dissipator upper, actually. If I'm going to have 16" of barrel, I want the longest sight radius I can get with it. The carbine or mid-length gas system under the handguards takes care of the reliability issues the early Dissy had with the rifle length gas tube. They don't specify heavy or light barrel profile, but they do say it's fluted, so I would assume it started life as a heavy barrel. Of course, if you are going straight to optics, the extra sight radius won't matter at all, and you might as well pick up the carbine upper.

Oh, and it looks like the A3 carbine upper is already ban compliant - the others would need work. I wish they would put the no lug FSB on the Dissipator - it's not like there are any bayonets that will actually fit that layout.

Here's an example of both the "Dissipator" model and the heavy barrel carbine. I prefer the heavy barrel.
