I was thinking of going to the MRA this weekend during office hours. I'm not a member, but I'm looking for a club to join and I thought I would check out the facilities.

My questions:

Is it possible to do some shooting while I'm there, or do I have to wait until I'm a full member? Also, is the Loeb range still problematic? I read some earlier posts that many of the lanes were down due to damage. Finally, is the place crowded? Will I ever have to wait to shoot?

Thanks,

-G

I can't see them letting you shoot there unless your a member or guest of a member, there must be some liability issue.
I have not been a member there for very long, just over a year but the loeb is never to full to shoot. Last night i was there and it was the busyest I have ever seen it at night but there were still 3 lanes open.
As far as problems, it seemed when I 1st joined 1 or 2 lanes were always down, but since they fixed them this summer there have been no issues that I have seen. Most times when the lane was down I could fix it myself with no tools.

The office is open from about 9am to 12 pm.

The range is no longer problematic. There are occasionally lanes down due to misplaced rounds which are usually quickly fixed. There are 12ish ranges on the loeb and chances you will not have to wait.

To use the facilities you have to be a member except for the clays fields.

I am not sure if I am going to be there this weekend but PM me and I can take you next Sunday as a guest.

How quickly can I become a member? Is it possible to do in 1 day or 1 week?

Thanks,

-G

No, you have to go there during office hours and pay your fees. If you choose to work 8 hours, you save some money otherwise you get charged more. Once you pay your fees and they take your picture, they schedule your written test on range rules. After you pass the written test on range rules you have to take a shooting test with a 10/22 rifle, revolver and semi auto. If you pass that, you get your key fob with 24/7 access. Overall process can take 3 or so weeks.

Thanks for the info. Is the test difficult? Should I try to memorize the whole rule/handbook, or is a careful reading good enough?

Also, what is the range test like? All my weapons are semi-auto. Am I graded on being able to handle them correctly or is it just about hitting a target?

The test is easy. Study the range rules and you will be fine. Test is multiple choice and fill in the blank. Questions pertain to restrictions on certain ranges, times you can and can not shoot outside, and basic firearm saftey rules. You will be fine if you read the manual carefully. No need to study the manual as though its a final in college. LOL

The range test is a peice of cake everyone usually passes. You shoot all .22lr weapons. A revolver, semi-auto and rifle. If you hit the paper, you pass. Targets are usually 30-40 feet away. Its easy dont worry about it. Good Luck!
