Hi all, I've recently obtained my LTC-A and my first firearm (S&W M&P40). I've been trying to look around and see what pistol ranges are nearby Boston and was hoping some of you guys could help me with your suggestions. I don't have a car so something public transportation accessible would be a bonus, that being said i wouldn't mind driving out somewhere once a month or so. Also I dunno if this is going to be something easy to get near Boston, but I'd like to be able to practice different positions shooting instead of the typical shooting down a firing lane. I know Harvard sportsmen club offers something like this, but it is quite a trek and was wondering if there was something closer. Appreciate any feedback you guys can give!

There's a range in Malden I think . Colddayinhell knows about it should be able to get the by a bus.

Shoot cold a pm .

Why do so many buy a .40 first ..... Is it the fs news letter ?

There is a range in Malden, it's probably a 10 minute walk from Malden Station. Mystic Valley Gun Club.
Indoor pistol only or .22 cal rifles.

Ive been meaning to join the Dot club since I live less than a mile away.

I currently belong to Braintree which is 15-20 minutes and has two indoor ranges and a 100 yard rifle range, outdoor pistol range and archery.

I was thinking of heading over to Mystic Valley Gun Club on the 3rd thursday (13th) of the month @ 7pm as per the directions on their website. Can anyone who is a member confirm this is a good time to come by and meet the membership?

You can totally bring a M&P40 on bus for a range trip. Not sure if its in your future, but are you planning to buy a long gun? That could make a difference what range you eventually end up joining.
Also, anyone ever bring a rifle case on public transportation? Depending on where you are traveling, that could be an experience!

Yes the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7pm is when membership meetings are held.

Follow the link, it tells you what to bring.

i drive by that range every few weeks, does anyone on here belong there? I never saw a thread in any of the clubs threads...

I'm a member as well. As far as the range goes, it is what it is. 50ft indoor, nothing greater than .44Mag/.45ACP (i.e. no SW500/5.7x28mm). I took my NRA Basic Pistol class there and the instruction was great. If you plan on getting your LTC through Boston (may god help your soul) this is a good place to practice towards the Moon Island range test, as they have the same Ruger Security/Service Six revolvers and targets that you'd have to qualify with. The neighborhood is sketch mcgetch and the behavior of some of the residents can be borderline disturbing (avoid the McDonalds at Fields Corner at all costs!), but I haven't had any significant issues there in that regard. The upside is that the majority of the time I've got the entire range to myself, as there's usually only one other shooter there, if at all. They do have a policy that guests must posses an LTC in order to shoot at the club, which is something I go back and forth on. Although now that I've moved out of the city, I want to shoot my rifles more, and I wish I had joined a second range a long time ago.

Ah I guess Mystic valley is out for me then, I'd like to take my girlfriend to the range with me every once in a while, but she doesn't have citizenship in the US so she can't get a LTC. Are there any other clubs around that are more lenient with bringing guests to the firing range? I might be looking into rifle, I have been looking at getting ruger's 10/22 takedown, but I think most pistol ranges allow for .22lr.

NO, you can still join MVGC, none of the guests I bring possess their LTC.
You misread BostonVI's post, he was NOT referring to MVGC, but a range in Boston I believe.

As far as MVGC goes, in the meeting Bob will go over everything and he says you can bring any number of guests you want, but only ONE is allowed in the firing room with you, the rest can watch on the other side of the glass.

I'm a Director at MVGC. Bringing a guest is fine, LTC is not required. (We even have some members who don't have an LTC.) Any rimfire rife is fine, any centerfire pistol is fine (including magnum calibers.) Our rules are very straightforward and are designed with safety in mind.

In the fall and winter we have .22LR static steel matches once a month that are a lot of fun. Lots of guys with 10/22s show up and shoot. It's always a good time.

If you want a tour shoot me a PM and I'll show you around. I'm only 15 minutes away so as long as I'm not with a customer or otherwise occupied I can swing by pretty much any time.

Close. [grin]

Only one guest is allowed forward of the ready line (under the direct supervision of the member.) Others can watch from behind the ready line. The member is responsible for his guests at all times.

The pertinent rules are:
MVGC Rules said:
  • No guest may handle or fire any firearm unless under DIRECT SUPERVISION of a member.
  • A member and guest are limited to one shared firing point.

You can get a license with a green card if she has one, you don't need to be a citizen (although some are confused on this issue, don't let them put you off)
