I picked up a new Ruger LCR in .22 over the weekend. My first revolver, but not my first Ruger. When I got it home, I noticed that something inside in the vicinity of the hammer rattles like crazy. It's definitely not the cylinder or the trigger. It does it more if I shake it from side-to-side. It continues to do it as I slowly squeeze the trigger. Once the hammer falls, it stops. As I slowly release the trigger, it stays quiet until the trigger resets.

I don't remember the display model doing this. (I wouldn't have bought one if it did.)

Before I bring it back, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has this same rattling noise.

Thanks.

Never mind. A couple of minutes on Google found this from Ruger's FAQ. Apparently it's a known, normal annoyance.

"Sometimes when I shake my Ruger LCR revolver, I hear a slight rattle; is that normal?
Like all newly manufactured Ruger revolvers, your LCR has a transfer bar safety system as part of the fire control mechanism. As a result, a hammer blow can be transmitted to the firing pin only when the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear. This is a positive internal safety feature. By design, the transfer bar is allowed some movement within the fire control mechanism so that trigger pull is not affected. Due to this necessary "play" in the transfer bar, a shooter will sometimes hear the transfer bar "rattle" when the revolver is shaken. This rattle caused by the play in the transfer bar is completely normal in the LCR."

The LCR is too light for pistol-whippin so Ruger figured the rattle was acceptable...

How is the trigger on it? I've read a review or two about it, stating it was bad--not as good as the centerfires.

My SP101 and LCR both have the Ruger rattle (the LCR might be worse, though).

I'd classify it as "OK". It seems fairly smooth. The trigger pull is heavier than I'd like, but that's true of everything I've bought in MA over the years. I haven't taken it to the range yet.

I had a LCR in 38. That rattle drove me mad! I could hear it even when I carried it concealed. Great little gun but sold it because of the rattle. I swear I even heard it in my sleep after awhile!

I got this in .22 as something new and different to take to the range. It's my first revolver. My thought was that if I liked it, I'd also get it in .38 as an alternate carry piece. It's too soon to rule that out, but the rattle is a big put-off. It seems like it would have been fairly simple to prevent that. (Of course, I say "simple" based on having absolutely no idea what's actually involved.)

All I know at this time is my PM9 and PPS don't rattle.

I didn't think the rattle was that bad, but my keys rattle something fierce in my pocket normally.

OP: Try the regular LCR trigger in the storm, from what I've read the 22LCR is more stiff than the 38/357. Rimfires need a harder hit for reliable ignition, so, the 38/357 may have a better trigger. Also, IMO, the recoil is night and day different between the 38 and the 357 versions. I'm not much of a shooter, but I just couldn't handle the 38 even with wadcutters; the 357 (with 38's) is about my limit. I'd recommend trying before buying.
