Opinions are like..... well, we all know how that ends....

i'm looking for a bolt action rifle in .223 with a scope and i want to be able to hit what i aim at out to... say... 300yds
i've pretty much decided on .223 over .308 just for cost, weight, etc....
i'm not looking for a hunting rifle, though, i wouldn't mind hunting bullseyes and tight shot groups at 100, 200... maybe even 300

i've read reviews, people saying the 700ADL isn't terribly accurate out of the box (as compared to what?) i've also read that the Axis XPs are tack drivers out of the box....

ability to shoot 5.56 el cheapo ammo for plinking would be a plus... i've heard tell of a wylde chamber in the savages, not sure about the remingtons... budget here is about $400

the remington is on sale at ****'s $200 off and there's a $50 rebate by mail bringing it to about $400
i've seen Axis XPs online for just under $400 (but haven't seen any in a retail environment locally...

so, anyone own either rifle? anyone have an opinion on the relative accuracy of either?

if anyone were going to suggest a different model or different manufacturer, the other thing these two rifles have in common is that they come with scopes.... cheap scopes granted, but a cheap scope is more useful than no scope :)

I don't have the exact rifle, I have a 700 SPS Varmint in .308 and it's a great shooter. Not a fan of the scope I have on it, but that was my fault, not the gun. I'm a big fan of the Remy, myself...

I have a savage axis package rifle in 243, camo finish. its a helluva thing. drives tacks and didnt break the bank. After 100 or so shots the trigger smoothed out and the gun is very pleasant to shoot!

Make sure you check on the twist rate of whatever rifle you are looking at. a 1:12" is really only useful for light bullets (probably 55 grain and under) and are geared towards varmint shooters. a 1:9" will get you up to the mid 60's and maybe even 69's if your rifle likes them. 1:7 lets you shoot the 75's and 77's that shine at distances over 400 yards.

IMO, I wouldn't go with anything less than 1:9 and would look for 1:7, but you probably aren't going to find that in an off-the-shelf rifle in that price range.

The scope is supposed to have been bore-sighted at the factory....
this is my first scoped rifle (Iron Sights FTW!) i tightened the mount screws, so that may have thrown it off, but
out of the box it was shooting about 12" low and 14" right (at 100 yards) once i got the clicks sorted... damn... this thing is freakin AWESOME!

3-9x40 Bushnell "Sharpshooter" scope with see-through caps...

took me three shots (50 yards) to pierce that quarter, the second shot nicked the rim, the third re-arranged George's face...

yeh, never had to deal with shooting between heartbeats before...
