Hi, everyone. I have decided on buying an 870 pump due to it's durability and reputation. Having looked at the current models available, I see that they have the Model 870 Express Tactical that is affordable and highly rated by most. I was about to order one when I noticed that they also have a tactical with a pistol grip: Model 870 Express Tactical A-TACS Camo. I don't really prefer the Camo, as I am not hunting with it, nor would I necessarily think anyone would. I am not sure if a pistol grip provides for better accuracy, handling, etc., considering this is my first shotgun purchase. [shocked]

For home defense situations, would you all recommend that a pistol grip is preferable or not?

As long as we're talking shotguns with stocks on them here, pistol grip or not all comes down to personal preference. Some shooters prefer the way a pistol-grip stock fits them over a more sporting profile, and vice versa. The only way to really know is to try the PG stock out, and try the non-PG stock out, and see which fits better.

I have short fingers, all of the pistol grip stocks I tried for my 870 where a touch to far away from the trigger....hands on. You can add all sorts of stocks later and generally cheaper than OEM. want adds, ebay ect ect are flooded with tactical extras for 870s heck extra stuff for all sorts of reasons, styles of shooting ect ect.

Correct.

I am a member at Harvard Sportsmen's and I haven't gone by the shotgun range enough to see someone there so I haven't had the opportunity to try one out. I was thinking about heading up for the pumpkin shoot. Perhaps I can try one out there.

While not an 870, I have a pistol-gripped Benelli SuperNova Tactical, will have it at the shoot and you are welcome to try it. There will likely be Mossy's and 870's galore as well. Whether or not you choose a pistol grip will come down to preference. For me, the pistol grip feels better - especially in low-ready. I find that I present less of the barrel when going room to room, but again - that's just me. many are just fine with a traditional stock....

I think the regular stock would be more versatile. You may want to take it in the field or trap field. That's not to say you can't do that with the pistol grip but you don't see them as often there. I have a 870 express with slug and bird barrels and really like the gun. It's not much of a looker but a great dependable shooter.

when you run out of shells a wood stock makes kickin club, but if you have narrow hallways the pistol grip will reduce the required swing area..../sarcazzzzzam

on a more serious note, full stock is alot more pleasant to shoot. and I believe more controlable during recoil.

Get the 870 express in black with the full length mag from FS for somewhere in the neighborhood of 320 bucks, and then buy the Knoxx recoil reducing stock on amazon. That's what I did, great setup for what I was looking for in a shotgun.

I find the pistol grip/ M4 stock set up to be the most pleasant way to shoot my 870.

I also find that that setup gives me a lot more leverage to keep the muzzle down while firing.

That is a nice set up Atmay, I was just responding to the op as a pgrip or std stock options, but I like the idea of yours.

Finally bought one. I got a Remington 870 express with a 28" barrel and a Mossberg 18" barrel for home defense. Enough bird shot shells for a few hours of skeet shooting too. Can't wait.

Edit: Decided to just get the generic model and add what I want later. Thought it best to go cheap first and then add what I want later.

Good choice. It won't let you down.

I've heard good things. The 18" barrel has a choke on it that looks like a medieval torture device.

Don't really care if it's for door breach or not, if I have to use the 00 9 pellet shell, I won't really be thinking about what it looks like...

Model 870 Express Tactical A-TACS Camo.

Do not want. There seem to be some unique problems with this stock and finish. Get a regular 870 and change out stocks, or get one custom-made by someone who specializes in "duty" shotguns.
