i will be passing papers on a house on Wednesday in Maynard and decided that i needed a house warming present..... bought a Remington 870 identical to the one in the picture.

this is my first shotgun. I've done a lot of research and this seemed to be the shotgun to go with. from my understanding there are alot of 870s out there and hopefully a lot in the NES community.

Tell me what i should know about my new in box 870

tricks, tips and otherwise useful info

ps basically still sitting in the box and haven't cleaned it or shot it yet

As a long-time 870 owner, I can tell you that you now own one of the toughest and most durable shotguns ever manufactured. The FBI, Secret Service, Immigrations & Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Marshals Service and many other federal, state and local LE agencies, as well as military units around the world, issue the 870 in 12-gauge as standard weapons. With this one firearm, you can defend your home, hunt birds, waterfowl, deer and black bear as well as compete in skeet, sporting clays and trap shooting. It is the Swiss Army Knife of firearms. Good luck, shoot straight and stay safe.

If you find that heavy loads get stuck in the chamber after firing, you will need to polish the chamber, at least I had to. Lots of info if you Google it. I used a brass cleaning brush with fine steel wool on it, and an electric drill, to polish it for just a few seconds, and didn't have any trouble after that.

Very good point. Using it a bunch also helps with this. My 870 smoothed out as I grew up with it. I had trouble racking and ejecting rounds back when I was a skinny 14 year old, but over time as I aged, it got smoother with usage.

for loads i got some rifled slugs to shoot and also some low recoil 00 buck defense rounds... hopefully i can go tommrow

any other tricks , tip, or otherwise useful knowledge

Good, rugged & reliable.
One thing about the 870 is that reassembly can be a little puzzling at first.
There is a flat detent spring on the inside of the receiver that needs to be depressed so the rails and bolt assembly can slide back into the receiver.
Once you do it a few times it's easy.

I have the exact same 870. I recommend giving it a very thorough cleaning before firing it. I didn't do such a great job and it jammed a few times the first time I took it to the range. I cleaned it well and it has worked great ever since. Enjoy it.

I've got a 60's 870 Wing Master. BEAUTIFUL gun. So smooth in operation. I've got a 28 inch barrel and a 20 inch barrel. It'll do whatever I want...forever.

If you want a different barrel for whatever reason, they are plentiful and Mossberg as well as Remington fit.

You have a nice gun there.

(I fixed your orig post)

Yeah, had that problem myself. Also I was sometimes unable to fill the magazine to capacity, but after cleaning and putting the extension back on it was fine. Apparently they can come from the factory screwed on wicked tight which can get it out of alignment.

Give some very serious thought to picking up a Knoxx Spec-Ops recoil-reducing adjustable stock.

I put that on mine too. It's a noticeable difference in recoil. Not sure how much of that is from the spring vs the pistol grip though. The pistol grip will give you a solid hold on the gun.

I special ordered the 870 tactical version last December and picked it up last Monday. I have the flu and haven't taken it out yet. I have only been admiring it up to know. Next week when I feel better and hopefully we get a day like yesterday, I'm going to take it out to the range and let it do God's work.

that extension was on there wicked tight. i had to use channel locks to get it off. impossible to get it off otherwise

i looked up that recoil reducing stock. does the connection from the stock to the reiceiver look as funny in real life as it does in these pics?

You need to do a really really good detail strip and clean, the anti corrosion stuff they use is not a good lube.
My dad would always get some super fine emrycloth and touch up the spots on the action that show contact after the first few boxes of ammo. My 870 express is smooth as silk, after my dad did his little polishing job.

just curious... how does the 870 compare to a mossy 500? I've used the 500 as my trap gun for quite a while now and i love it

I think Mossberg is a little of a love or hate them type deal.
I personally do not care for their pump shotguns at all. The 580A1 being better than the plain jane 500, but I don't like the feel of them. I think they feel a little cheap, the ones I've handled rattled a lot, and and didn't carry the same fit and finish as the 870. I also do not care for the placement of the safety. I prefer them near the trigger guard. Again this is only my thoughts and preferences.

The 870's action feels a little more smooth to me, and I just like the operation better. I also like the slide release placement better. The Remington 870 really is the standard against most other shotguns are judged.

That being said, Mossberg isn't crap either. some of their Autoloaders are rather nice. I like their 930SPX. It's much different than their pumps. Seems to be better made.

Shoot one and see what you think, I think that is really the only way you will know what you like better.
