Hello all,

I have an older Remington 742 with a stock thats been sanded. I was wondering if anybody knows of a product that I can finish the stock with to get that glossy clear finish that older Remington typically have. I did a google search, but could not find anything.

Thanks,

Matt

Whatever it is, it's super tough. I tried to strip a Rem stock because I couldn't stand the plastic-looking finish. Nothing I used (standard 5F5 and some other paint strippers) would touch it.

hmmm some one did all the work for you. A very nice tung oil hand buffed to a nice shine with a little wax will be nice...If the grain is nice. If the grain is open you need to get some grain filler or you end up with some dimples alover the place as the clear coat dries and sinks into the poors. My last 2 shotgun stocks I used a "marine use" poly coat it was water based and was easy to apply in very thin coats. Its ok, the gun gets used for hunting and this thick plastic looking coat helps protect it alot.

I purchased some "marine quality" poly coat. brand name escapes me. it work well BUT has that plastic look. Tough as nails. Its applied to a few shorgun stocks.
If the wood has any nice graining to it try some tung oil or birchwood casey tru oil kit---I did not really like the look of the tru oil. Could have been the stock or me.

last resort is funiture refinisher- something about a hand oiedl, buffed and waxed piece of wood.

sorry for the redundent post. tried looking up the poly coat and did not relize I posted ???
