Ruger P89? Anyone have experience with these?

Mec Gar is a top manufacturer of mags and make them for leading gun companies.

Yeah they seem very well built, I'm just wondering if I'm playing with fire by having these mags in this state. There's no way someone can prove when they were made I'm guessing.

MecGar actually makes most of Ruger's mags.

Look at almost any current Ruger and the mag will say "made in Italy". Thats a MecGar.

Re pre/post ban.

Take the base plate off the bottom of the mag and check the inside for a date stamp. If there's nothing there, you are good.

Hah didn't even think to look at the baseplate. Will do that when I get home in a little while. I really hope there aren't any date stamps on them as I don't want to spend more money searching for non dated mags.

I'm not saying to look at the baseplate. I'm saying to look inside the magazine body itself. Some makers stamp dates on the inside of the tube.

My bad, I misread what you said when I was reading it quickly on my iPhone. So I just took the mag apart and there are no date stamps inside the mag body or on the baseplate. The mag is brand new without a scratch on it but I should be fine I'm guessing?

Anyone carry a P89? Good size and heavy gun. Curious if there are many options for IWB holsters, I haven't researched them yet. Thought I'd ask some people on here that may have advice.

Holster options are slim, to say the least. These pistols haven't been made in a while and they were never really very popular carry pieces to begin with so there are not a lot of holsters out there for it.

Blade Tech offers a Kydex IWB for it. http://shop.blade-tech.com/nano-holster-c-1_13_16.html#.UpQuUflJOSo

This is one of very few companies that I have found that still have holsters for this pistol.

Just to add - most holsters that fit the P85 and P90 will also work with the p89.

Andrew,

The Crossbreed Supertuck is a great holster for large, heavy guns. Here's the magic of this kind of holster. The backing is leather. The holster itself is relatively thin kydex.

Go buy yourself a Supertuck for something like a Glock 17/M&P9 or similar. Then use a heat gun and reform the kydex for your Ruger. et Voila! A supertuck for your ruger.

I purchased a Supertuck to carry a Commander 1911. I soon realized that I was too much of a wuss to deal with the weight. It wasn't conscious, I just never reached for the 1911 and it just sat in the safe. So I used a heat gun to reform it using a Glock 19. I'm actually carrying it now.

There are some things to make sure of when doing this.
1) make sure you preserve the sight groove. I used a slim screwdriver to reform it.
2) make sure the gun sits deep enough into the holster so the trigger guard is covered
3) make sure to cut the leather away enough so that you can get a proper grip on the the first time. No re-gripping allowed.

Thats it.

PM me if you want more info on how I did this.

Don
