Hello out there. I just purchased a new Savage 12BTCSS in .204Ruger. It shoots all the factory ammo i've put through it very well. My only problem with it is that the Winchester Super-X 34gr. JHP will not feed.?.Wich is really anoying seeing as how it is one of the more accuarte rounds I have tried thus far. My question is does anyone else have any issue with this round or firearm? Oh one more thing I bought some A-Zoom snap caps for it and the bolt would not full lock down on them.? The bolt would slide all the way in but on closing the handle it would bind up. Any and all thoughts are apreciated and welcome.
Thanks
Anthony

My only suggestion is for the snap caps. Try measuring the dimension with a vernier caliper and check it against a live round. If there are any differences try to sand them down enough so that they will fit. I don't know what they are made of, but I have done it to my 30-06 snap caps and now they work fine. I just took a little off the shoulder. I hope this helps.

A friend had a Savage. The bolt handle wouldn't cam over and fully go down. Called Savage and they said check the screws used in the scope mounts. Seems some are too long and protrude into the chamber area. They were right.

So, other loads work, it's just the Winchester 34gr that won't feed?

Where is it hanging up? My first inclination would be that the magazine feed lips were the issue, and the factory uses a different load than Winchester 34 HPs to test, so they didn't see it. As the bolt pushes the cartridge out of the mag, the lips are supposed to let the front of the cartridge pop up slightly out of the mag, so the bullet points into the chamber and guides the rest of the cartridge in. If it doesn't get up high enough, it will run into problems. (Of course, if it pops up too high, it also will find problems) Winchester may either have a different shape bullet, or slightly different cartridge dimensions that are not letting this happen. Did you try any other loads from Winchester? If they fed correctly, it's probably that bullet shape that's the issue. If that's the only Winchester you tried, their overall dimensions might be a hair different than the other brands.

I'm don't know how comfortable you are with bending the mag lips on a brand new rifle. You may want to give Savage a call, first.

Thanks for the input. I checked the mount screws and all is well there. I looked more closely at the winchester 34hp and it appears the the rim of the hollow is catching on the way into the chamber. the other win ammo i used worked just fine (ballistic silver tips). they did a real number on the golf ball i shot :)
as for the snap caps i took them back and got new ones and they worked. must have been a bad batch.

alls well that end well.

I believe those have a big fat HP cavity similar to the Speer bullet in .224. Same issue. Polish the ramp, that is all you can do. You can check over at Predator Masters for more info.
