I am seeking a printer that will be dedicated to duplex printing on 4x6 index cards, color preferred. This printer would be set up dedicated to this purpose and needs to be able to print a batch of individual cards. The current problem is that the duplex printers seem to have a problem feeding the smaller and thicker stock. I'm looking to print numerous different double sided cards in one job, so manually re-inserting is impractical.

Are you needing to print directly on 4x6 individual cards, or is an 8.5x11 sheet of perforated 4x6 card acceptable?
I have not done it in volume really, but my HP LaserJet Pro M478 works great on the avery perforated sheets. (only use them to track reloading lots so i only print ~12ish at a time and i use duplex to get both sides)

An update: I just looked, i use Avery 5388 which are 3"x5" cards.

Individual pre-sized cards. I am automating an industrial process.

Might be a dumb question, but have you checked the paper settings on your current printers? When I recently updated the drivers on my Brother duplexing printer, I noticed an option for many different paper settings, including index and envelopes.

first problem is adjustable tray sizing guides. none that i know of will handle an index card, be it 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 index card. they have settings for letter, legal or euroupean sizes.

they will handle a letter sized perf sheet of cards as @Noreaster mentioned, but i don't know if anyone makes them in 4 x 6, as that wouldn't work on letter sized paper. may be available in a legal sized sheet, but that only would give 4 labels per sheet.

individual cards have to be fed through the by-pass tray, also called the envelope feeder. you would have to change the setting on that tray in your menu to "any size".

sensors in the printer will cause a jam if it detects a different size paper than what is designated for the tray you're using.

as far as handling heavy card stock on a duplex printer, yeah, it's an issue. straight printing from the by-pass/envelope feeder is 1 turn of the card. duplex is 4 turns.

hope that helps

You're gonna have problems with the pickup at 4x6. Do they HAVE to be exactly 4x6? You might have better luck printing on A4 and splitting up into 4 for 5 7/8ths.

You may also be able to modify the pickup cassette to be thinner, that would be better at grabbing thicker stock.

How heavy is your card stock?

If they must be 4x6 have a look at industrial sublimation printers like the epson surecolor. I only have experience with the large format surecolor printers, but I'm sure they have a smaller offering.

Make sure the printer is on the new allowed printers roster that will be released shortly
