Why?
So you don't have to spend some afternoon sitting in a patrol car, trying to explain to some local LEO, why you have an unnumbered, unregistered firearm.
*And if you want to make a bad situation worse; tell the officer he's wrong then try to educate him on the finer points of firearms regs.
Or so you can identify, prove ownership and get the piece back, should you and it ever get seperated.
