Ive had no problems with this gun when I shot it, but its a bit larger in terms of the grip than I'd like and with my 1911, I already have a full sized pistol at my disposal.

Now, as I await word on my LTCA, I find myself poring over various reviews of compact, subcompact and pocket guns.

Not intending to carry my 1911 all the time, I'm wondering if any of you have suggestions on a reasonably priced, quality gun (IE a manufacturer that doesn't suck) I should keep an eye out for.

My criteria are as follows - Automatic (already have a model 60 revolver)

- caliber: 9x19 or better, capable of reliably feeding and firing JHPs

- capacity - would prefer somethng capable of taking hi caps, but at the least, an 8 rd capacity

- size - something compact - Im a roundish guy, so something concealable, moreso than the G17, moerso than the 1911

- size part 2: the biggest detractor for the Glocks seems to be the grips - just seems as if it bulges a bit too much - my hand is naturally more comfortable with the contours of the 1911...

- weight - I love the weight of the S&W compacts, springfield XDs etc

I considered the bodyguard and the PPK, but I just don't know if I feel comfortable with the .380, hence the 9x19 or higher requirement...

any thoughts?

Why not the M&P9c? I'm of a bit of a "jolly" build myself and find it to be a great carry gun. Mag capacity is MA crippled to 10 but the mags are cheap. Three backstrap sizes almost guarantees you can make it fit your hand. It's relatively cheap as well.

Thanks guys - I did see some reasonably priced M&Ps and I loved the PPS - any thoughts on the S&W Sigmas (SW9VE) handguns? I saw a deal on four seasons that included 4 mags for 240.

Stay away from the Suckmas.

Rented one at a range last year. Liked it well enough until three things happened within a 10-minute span:

1. One FTF. Bad feed, but magazine was securely seated... not a huge problem, but still.

2. Pin in joint of trigger slipped almost completely out. Used the baseplate of a magazine to hammer it back in.

3. Manually locked back the slide and... the slide stop snapped off.

[laugh]

When I brought the little piece of metal to the person at the counter, they looked at it and laughed.

I said, "I don't think I'll be buying one of these."

"Yeah, I wouldn't, either."

I cast my vote for an FNX-9. Go hold one, for a double-stack mag, they're incredibly comfortable. However, I'm not terribly sure how concealable they are.

Hey AngelKing, are you anywhere near a range where you can rent stuff and try it out? Everyone has their favorite carry gun, but we all have different sized hands and body shapes. If you're able to try a few out, you might have better luck finding one you like.

You can get a feel for grip in the store, but you really need to shoot a few. I shot a S&W M&P 40 recently, and I hated the trigger (and it already had a trigger job done to it.)

thanks for the advice guys - I did get an opportunity to shoot a PPS, liked it. May hold off and see if I like the M&P as well. Methinks I'll be joining NES soon so keep an eye peeled for a G17 for sale!

S&W 9313 or 908. All metal frame, 9mm single stack mag. Very accurate and reliable. Easily concealed. Probably the best compact pistol S&W ever made. Shoots well with any ammo you put through it including +p. Not to easy to find lately, but if you do find one try it out.

Well, its been exhausting looking at all of these guns, but I had a little time today and checked out a Ruger SR9C and MAY be going in that direction.

Decent price, good capacity and it has a lot of what I liked about the Glock, in terms of the action, relative light weight, trigger safety AND a manual safety (I'm fanatical about having that one extra failsafe) and I really love the ambidexterous mag releases and light trigger pull.

What may have turned me over was the grip - my hands, as said before, struggle with how the glock bulges - I like how the backstrap can be flipped to make for a slimmer or wider fit. Overall, I'm feeling pretty good about it.

I'm not done yet - a buddy of mine is trying to convince me to reconsider the .380 and swap for his PK380 - not so sure though - I still can't get my head into the whole .380 mindset and as much as I like Walther, I held a PK380 at the gun show and it felt kind of cheap and I noticed mags were 40 bucks?? Oh well, its a chance to go shoot something else and he has an FAL, so it should be a fun day at the range.

Yes, apparently upon further review - adn looking at a few of them on youtube, that deal appears to be too good to be true.

I find it amusing that you think a Glock was too fat in the grip yet you were looking at a Sigma... does not compute. Maybe you just need to look at a 3rd gen or 4th gen glock. If the gun is too fat (side to side) you should be looking at single stacks like Kahrs, etc.

Well now, don't I feel like a mook. With the finger grooves, the Glock fits better in my hand.

If it's going to be your only carry piece don't waste your money on a "mouse gun". There are plenty of smaller 9mm guns that you'll be happier with in the long run.

you're right - and honestly after all that I've read on the .380, not so much....that and I fired the PK380 - really didn't care for the finish of the weapon. I have to say, shopping for a car was easier than shopping for a carry piece.

I might be way out on a limb here...... and i am a Glock guy....
BUT i find my gen 2.5 Glock 21 (in 45 auto) fits my hands WAY better than my gen 2 G22 (in .40 S&W)
and i carry it IWB . you need the proper holster so it rides a little high or it won't be comfortable) Granted it is a bit big for a carry gun in the summer because i like my fitted T's (tryin to find a slim 1911 for summer AND the 1911's feel good in my hands as well)
plus.... .45 > 9mm
just sayin
