I'd like to see the way people have their Pelican cases or the like setup with their guns.
Please tell me if you cut the foam for the case or you had someone do it, if so who?

My girlfriend bought me this case (Pelican 1750) for my birthday and I think this is the way I am going to fill it, plus a few more goodies. I am going to have the foam custom cut by a place here in MA that sells and custom cuts Pelican case foam.

Here are some pics, what do you think?

*Before I get any PMs, the PMAGs are internally limited to 10rds, and would be destroyed if tried to change that*

It is not a Pelican but like one. I picked it up at work.
One of our vendors shiped us some components in these.
I keep looking to score some more of them.

No custom cutting involved. It has the Pick n Pluck foam.

I would be curious to know who in mass will cut foam for you. All so keep us posted and how it comes out and the cost.

i built a foam cutter a year or two ago. works pretty well.

i'm actually looking for new foam for my storm iM3300, want 2 setups (one for 2 service rifles, one for my long range rig)

The place is called Cases-Cases out of Wakefield Ma. They quoted me over the phone $125-$150 to custom cut the foam to any design I want. I am going to have it done soon. Will post when it's finished. They were very friendly over the phone and were very helpful when my girlfriend bought the case from them, even overnighted my case on their dime because they didn't have it in stock so that my girlfriend would have it in time for my birthday.

took a iM3300, decided coyote tan was bland.

and ended up with this

left extra room for stuff i decided to not put in the case. if/when i do it again, i'll likely cut one set of foam for 2 complete rifles, plus another set for my long range rigs. just gotta find a cheap supplier of ultra firm 2 1/4" charcoal foam.

I'm sure you already know this IB, but nothing will be on the lid, so those pmags will either have to go on layer 1 if the case has the depth for it and is double layered, or in a separate container altogether. If trying to maximize the storage, there might be space to fit them under the stock or the upper

There should be room for them in the lid, only thing would be to make sure they stay there when the case is closed. I'll have a thin layer of foam in-between the lid and the bottom of the case so that they don't rub up against the guns.

I thought about cutting foam, but then you end up with a case that is specific to the configuration of the weapon when it was made. Instead, I used a number of soft cases (one for rifle and smaller ones for accessories/magazines) when flying.

Update:

I brought all my guns that I wanted in the case over to that cases cases place here in MA. They traced them and everything and said that they would start on it the next day. I get an email, about 3 days later saying that they miscalculated the price and it would now be $350 or even more, so over double the price they first quoted me! The email pretty much sounded like they didn't want to bother with even doing it. I was pissed. So if anyone is considering buying a case or having them cut the foam, don't!

Anyone know any other places here in MA or NH that cut foam, or anyone with a homemade foam cutter want to earn some $$ for a good foam cutting job?

It's been a long time but when I was in school I used to do a lot of foam cutting for models. They make a small, hand held, battery powered wire cutter. I used to buy them at Charette or Dick Blick. They're short money and work okay for this.

The best bet is to use thin cardboard as a cutting template. Cut your design out of the cardboard then use some spray adhesive (3m spray 77 works well) on only the cardboard. Let it dry tacky then stick it to the backside of the foam. Obviously, orient the cardboard the right way to get the righ cut. With the cardboard it place, cut it like you're using a router with a template. It's really easy.

If you use a small hand held, you may want to use a template top and bottom to keep your cuts straight.

When I cut the foam in my Storm case for my AR I just used a box cutter. I traced the objects on the foam using a sharpie... then just cut. It wasn't difficult at all. No need for special cutters or to pay others to do it for you.

I can't get on it right now, but there is a huge thread on ARFCOM in one of the accessories forums dedicated to custom Pelican cases. You'll definitely get some great ideas over there.
