Special permit approval for gun retailer near Lawrence school triggers complaints

But Richard Rivera, chairman of the zoning board, questioned why those now concerned with the training center never complained about the nearby Lawrence Rod and Gun Club.

“It was the school that opened where there’s a shooting range that’s been there for decades,” he said.

Odyssey Arms is also in Lawrence. God these people are retarded

One of my first memories of handling a firearm was walking into the town gun store one day after school, asking if I could check out a hand gun from the display case and trying to rack the slide like in the movies and practically tearing my hand up on the rear sights. (Not in Massachusetts)

There is nothing wrong with a gun shop near a school, as long as it’s managed responsibly — just the same as a liquor store, or convenient shop selling cigarettes. I’d argue that fast food and energy drinks for a kid is far worse for their health and safety than a gun shop.

In order to touch a gun, you need a permit. That means that all customers have been background checked, and have no history of criminal behavior, mental illness, or other issues. They are safer than the general public.

Well There It Is Jurassic Park GIF

Anyone ever do a study on number of shootings based on proximity to a gun shop ???
It's highly likely that there are more shootings in neighborhoods without gun shops than in those that do have them.

It’s for the children

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.”

Well, here in Taunton, they want to build a resort casino 300‘ from the entrance of an elementary school. What could possibly go wrong? Not saying it’s a good idea having a gun shop next to a school, but I’m willing to bet clientele will be monitored much more so than the clientele going to or leaving a resort casino.

They don't want the kids to see the guns.

There was a NPR story about this, where they'll only allow merchandise to leave the premises outside of school hours.

I mean, what sort of example would it be for ordinary people to be handling firearms, without acting like thugs, or action heroes in the movies?

The town where I teach has a sandwich shop right across the street from two public schools. The sandwich shop has been busted twice over the years because the employees can't seem to stop themselves from dealing cocaine with the chicken kebabs.

Nobody seriously suggests shutting down the sandwich shop. Its drug-dealing employees have done far more damage to local students than any gunshop ever could. I'd imagine a number of other towns have a similar situation going on.

Sometimes it's just a CVS and Fast Food that get our young misguided "yutes" in trouble...[thinking]

That's because in neighborhoods with most shootings almost everyone is a PP and firearms get bought and sold behind the dumpster instead of a gun shop
