Springfield M1a Scout Squad, Thoughts and personal experience?

My gun shop has a scout in stock and a socom in stock with black stocks.

I,talked with my buddy about the match M1a you had.
He said he called but then decided to just order a full blown build from LRB with the new receiver with integrated rails for scope. 5k and a estimated 9 month wait.

ATACR 4-16x42 F1 is on stand by when it comes in.

That must be one hell of a rifle.

Full blown ultra match. Heavy barrel , fancy walnut, bedded , rear lug receiver just to name a few plus add the LRB premium adds up quick..
Rear lug receiver is 1200$, barrel is 500$, stock is a extra fancy walnut blank that needs to be inletted he paid 500$ just for the blank add all the other parts and labor M1a get expensive quick.
He's retired shot for the navy with a NM M14 kids are grown and gone. He's going nostalgic and wanted the best
Figure a LRB standard barreled action will run you 1700-2500$ that's just the upper side. Still need stock and trigger group.

This is the place he mentioned for the wood blank.
I,don't know if it's the place he ended up going or not.
He didn't say who would do the in letting.

Wow. Things have gotten expensive. My Smith Enterprise was nowhere near that pricey.
Of course, that was 15 years ago.

Just a personal preference, but there's no way I'd put anything but a McMillan stock on a match rifle. I'd cry putting stick-em all over a pretty walnut stock. Plus the wood movement factor.

he wants a pretty rifle this time around.... fancy grade high grain walnut clereo or some shit.
I dont think he will be putting stick em on this one. He has his older NM M1a he shoots at matches when he does. It has that aweful crayon colored looking cammo stock. IIRC he said National Match Armory built that rifle.? Anyway he wants what he wants.

SEI barreled action with a stripped head spaced bolt is 1700$ how much to complete it ? quess it depends on the stuff you stick on it.

Back in Sept Bula offer a barreled receiver w/bolt for $995 in a group buy with either the 22" or 19.25" barrel.

That's more my speed ...I was just relaying some current prices from SEI.
The M1a was a bit cheaper to build 10-15 years ago.
You could buy M14 parts kits on the cheap side.
There is always a point of cost vs quality and accuracy.
LRB, SEI, National Match Armory, Fulton and a few others have a premium to what they deliver. If this premium is worth it is all open for debate...

Finally got the Scout Squad to the range and it seemed to perform well. Admittedly it's been a long time since I've show with just straight irons, and my skills are just not that good. In addition I only had my prescription sunglasses as my regular glasses are broken. This proved frustrating in the light / shade mix today.

I walked my sight in at 50 and produced a ok 5 shot group at 50. I didn't measure it, but all 5 shot were touching.

I moved to the 100 yard range and produced a 2 3 shot groups that were respectable as well. Again, no measurements as this thing isn't a target gun and frankly, I don't give a shit. I would say, 3.5 moa was easily held even with my crappy shooting with XM80C ammo. I have no doubt it can do better, but it's not a target gun.

I ordered Sadlak oversized mag release and spring guide (for the hell of it) and a Smith Indusries oversized bolt release.

My biggest takeaway, this thing shoots SOFT! A real pleasure to shoot

Nice , 308 is soft shooting to begin with. Add the weight of the rifle and makes for some easy shooting.
Target Gun it is not that's for sure never ment to be.
I like to test my guns ability along with my own.
I use SR-1 targets at 100 yards, shoot prone with sling . I and the rifle are doing well if I keep them in the black bull. Which is 6moa. Then really the big test for me is the SR1 off hand. I'm lucky to score mid eighties. Once in a while I'm low 90s

Really want to challenge your self try the MR31 target at 100 yards. Simulates 600 yard target.
The cmp matches will be starting at Pembroke soon and that's perfect for modern military match.

.308 soft shooting?

I guess it depends on the gun. I'll let you shoot my Browning A-Bolt Micro with a small 1.5-6x32 scope, someday. Its under 6.5 lbs with the optic and it has some pretty good recoil.

Then again my 13 lb Savage Model 10 FCP in an element chassis with a muzzle brake barely budges.

;-)

Shooting 600 yards was frustrating enough with a top quality a White Oak upper on an AR.... this rifle will never, ever be that.

I enjoyed X-C NRA High Power matches. Great people and a ton of fun, but with my schedules now committing a full Sunday once a month to shoot 60 rounds just isn't in the cards.

Now, shooting a USPSA rifle match with it for shits and giggles? Maybe

I was surprised at how much difference there was shooting .308 from a bolt gun vs a semi-auto. My first time was thru my M1A Scout Squad and I thought it was fun and I could shoot all day. Then a buddy had me try his bolt gun with solid wood stock and no recoil pad. I'm definitely a wimp because after 2 shots I was done with that gun. Had I shot the bolt gun first I NEVER would have bought a .308 rifle to shoot. I also recently shot a Scar 17s and that is even easier to shoot than the M1A. I don't think I'll ever buy/own a bolt action rifle.

Yeah you have to spend about 4k to get a M1a to shoot near WOA... although I have a handful of "old" guys still shouting their NM M1a that shoot well and still go out to Perry with them. Now consider a 2moa rifle is all that is needed to destroy the 10ring of a NRA XTC target. You just have to have 2moa skills...[wink] me I'm boarding 3moa prone 4-6 moa prone/sitting rapids and MOA of score rings off hand...
I consider 308 soft shooting even in a lite hunting rig.

Also to those shooting bolt guns or any rifle for that matter.
Get off the bench. Recoil is much more felt sitting at a bench. Shoot off hand , sitting/nealing or prone will help absorb the energy better.

M1a at 9ish lbs is about 12lbs of free energy coming back at you a lite hunting rig probably about 15lbs
Your average bolt gun is for hunting. With a shot or 3 being shot a few times each season.
This is why target guns are heavy. Also a heavier rifle for target shooting is easier to steady on target.

And a semi auto action, particularly gas operated, reduces felt recoil as the bits of the action are forced rearward which applies force forward on the rest of the gun...part of which is the butt.
Something you can try with the M14 is to close the gas valve so the action doesn't cycle then compare that to firing with it open.

This.. I have yet to find an easier recoiling 308 than the scar 17.

Get yourself a Mosin. That is probably the best/cheapest way to get into a bolt gun and learn the basics of it.

For what mosins are selling for right now a low end savage might be a better deal. Plus the surplus ammo is,no longer as cheap as it once was. I have not seen any in stock for a while and last few vendors who did it was only about 12 cents less than new production.
