Taurus 1911

Executive,

I have been looking at 1911 style guns. I have a tough time dealing with the almost 75% greater cost in .45 over .40 cal ammo. Para makes a 1911 double stack in .40, so my quesiton is what are the issues with the Para 1911?

As for cost of ammo, My recommendation is to invest in a Dillon 550 press and start making your own. You will amortize the cost of the reloading equipment rather quickly and be shooting beter quality rounds more often for less money.

The (new) Para double stack .40 offers few benefits here in MA. You are getting a fatter grip, and a two-round advantage over a single stack .45 1911. (There is also the availablility of pre-ban high capacity magazines if you want to hunt them down.) The one Para I have owned (a rather basic SSP) did not impress me. The components were poorly machined and the fit and finish were substandard. The pistol had a tendency to stovepipe with my usual .45 target load as well as with .45 WWB. This, and other Para 1911s I have handled also lacked that intangible feel of solidity and quality I expect from a firearm I'm spending close to +/- $800 for. I understand that intangibles are vague at best, but the gun just felt crappy. Kind of like comparing a Chinese knock off Rolex to the real thing. For more detail on Para problems/issues, check with NES member The Goose. A search of posts by The Goose will result in his personal horror story with Para customer service. Other members, Chris, in particular, I think, love Para. As with any product you will get varied opinions. My opinion is that there are superior products in the 1911 market, particularly Smith and Wesson which has a similar pricing scale.

Hows your taurus holding up? I got a hundred rounds through mine and it isn't accurate one bit. It shoots down and to the left by about a foot. The slide to frame fit sucks, the ambi saftey fell off and the barrel bushing is loose as a goose on the barrel. I called them yesterday explaining the problem to them, theire customer support was great. They told me to box it up and send it in. Fedex came to my house today to pick it up, Taurus even paid for overnight shipping. So far, so good, we will see in a couple of days what they say. As for you technical people, the barrel OD is .575 and the barrel bushing ID is .584. I could litterally feel the barrel moving around inside the bushing.

Is it really necessary to cut and paste your post into multiple threads?

Anyways, are you sure it's the gun? It could be a bad habit you've developed that may be leading to all your shots going off.

As for the tolerances, generally you get what you pay for. The Taurus was aimed to undercut the big-name makers like S&W, Springfield, and Kimber, and as such I wouldn't expect it to be as tight.
