To buy or to build?

I built my lower and then bought a used upper from the classifieds. Spent about 1k over a few months and ended up having the roll pins set by a smith but did the rest of the assembly by myself.

Sportsmans guide is running a sale on a complete Vietnam era M-16 kit (everything except lower reciever and disconnector) I think it's $699, so it would be a little more pricy than your build, but it is a new chrome lined barrel with vintage parts.

I looked there, but did not see it. Got a link?

I would recommend building it yourself. You'll get exactly what you want and you'll have a much better understanding of how the AR15 works -and the ability to fix it--than if you bought a complete rifle. Check out the "build it yourself" section in the AR15.com forum. There's an excellent sticky on how to put lowers and uppers together. If I were you I would build the lower yourself--very easy to do if you have good instructions-- and then buy a complete upper in whatever flavor you want. Buy quality parts and you can't go wrong. There's plenty of info in that regard on ar15.com.

From Remsport from various links here:
$63.00 lower parts kit
$98.00 lower
$161 Subtotal for built lower

$160.00 barrel
$321 Subtotal everything but stock, grip, and upper assembly

This leaves $319 for those items. I don't need a fancy schmancy stock, and would gladly take somebody's discarded seconds. Same for the upper parts. Anyone?
