Hey all,

In a couple weekends I will be going to do some shooting with my uncle up in Vermont. He has my grandfather's guns in his possesion. My question is since he wanted me to have some of the guns, if they are mass compliant is there a way to transfer them to me through an FFL? I understand this probably won't work for handguns but what about rifles and shotguns?

Thanks!

Long guns can be transferred to you at a VT FFL as long as they are MA AWB legal. Your understanding is correct on the handguns - those would have to be transferred to you by an FFL in MA.

Your uncle is the owner of record, so this is a straight-up transfer and not an inheritance...
That said, there is great info in the Inheritance thread here on "what to do after the original owner dies" type of thing.

As for non-bequest transfers, I'm pretty sure long guns can be transferred in and simply registered, as long as they are not "assault weapons" per the Massachusetts definition. IIRC, you'll have seven days to file eFA10 on them.

Handguns MUST be transferred through an FFL in Massachusetts per federal law. Find a friendly FFL to effect the transfer and have your uncle meet you at that shop...
If Face To Face at a Mass FFL is impractical for your uncle, then he can bring the handguns to an FFL in Vermont and have them send the handguns to your preferred FFL.
Make arrangements with your local FFL in advance if a Face to Face FFL transfer, or both FFLs if there'll be shipping involved! In the latter case the two FFLs will have to work together to swap license information before they'll effect the transfer.

As always, I Am Not A Lawyer and others will be along shortly to confirm or dispute any of the above!
