Want my AK47 more accurate

I want to keep the ak with the traditional look but make it more accurate. I have a rear peep sight on it but the front block sight just obscures the targets at 100 yards. I don't think hitting a 10" target at 100 yards is beyond the capabilities of the ak.

I have a front H3 sight on it and would love to find another with a smaller pin but don't think that will happen, anyone have some suggestions?

Any thoughts on some non-H3 front sights? I found these so far:

Spend some money and trained yourself. It's not your AK, but it's your shooting skill need more TLC. Send the AK to sksray, he'll ring the 5" target all day long.

practice makes perfect. there are plenty of people who aren't around anymore who can attest that the AK is accurate enough.

you can replace the front sight post with a thinner one, or you can spend that money on ammo and keep hitting the range. you could also just get a railed gas block replacement and throw and aimpoint PRO or a primary arms dot on there if you're having trouble with the irons. however, i'm a strong proponent of being able to shoot with irons before playing with optics.

You mean the guy who gives completely useless nonhelpful information without having a clue what they are talking about?

I have an ar, i shoot pretty damn well (ask anyone who was at the hora dolor event i shot well enough to finish first and i place top 3 usually at our club idpa events), and i specifically said the large front block sight post obscures too much of the target.
 
I zero all my AKs for a 6 hold and have no problem seeing targets at 100, 200, 300 yards, etc. with them.

The sights don't work for everyone though. If they are giving you trouble you should try a quality side rail mounted dot like the the RL mount and SPARC combo.

This. I have a russian red dot on my AK74 and it's made it very easy for me to shoot stuff at 300 yards with it.

Those front sight posts look interesting, though. I'd give those a shot and see how it turns out for you. I never even knew they existed.

I have just loved the old school traditional look of the ak and didnt want to ruin its lines with non-iron sights but i do want some tighter shot groupings. I can ring the 100 yard 16" plate at my range all day. I like having a front tritium sight on but not finding it with a thinner pin. Do the tritium paints work well at all if i went with one of the smaller pins?

The sight mount that goes in place of the rear sight isnt too bad, maybe couple that with a small reflex or something.

Was clanking the 5in metal plate from 100 yds with a Romak-1 30 rounds in a row at a time this wknd. And I am not an experienced shooter at all. AKs are much more accurate than ppl think. Maybe just need more practice. Sights are not canted? Next AK may have a red dot on it, but I like the plain traditional look.
 
Usually those words AK & accurate are NOT in the same sentence. [laugh]

AK are usually more accurate than most people give them credit for. [grin]

Have some one you know that you consider a better shooter than yourself try it out to see what kind of groups they are getting? Or try different brands of ammo?? Just my two cents. I never blame the firearms UNTIL I have had others try it and NONE of us can hit the paper with it! [shocked]

Even my wasr is more capable than i am most of time. I would try fixing your zeroing as You shouldn't be painting your target.

Prone, I was more accurate than my old 5.45x39 AK.
Offhand, it was a toss up. My groups were noticeably larger than even with my 10.5" AR15

I haven't really shot my old pre-ban Norinco 84S for accuracy. Its chambered in .223 and Ive been making up some very carefully controlled ammo.

put a rail on the AK... attach an AR via the rail......





that being said, i hate ladder sights, love the tech-sights on my 10/22s, so i'd likely get the AK sights from the tech-sights guys if my wife lets me spend more money on gun stuff....

Everyone can quit with the suggestions to practice. I was specific in asking about experience with thinner or smaller front sight posts.
 
I cant with the current sight since it is tritium, it need to be thick enough to hold the little glowing tube of h3. Wonder if i kept the original post.

I was watching a video with Jim fuller who does some work on the rear sight by rounding the corners and also opening the notch a bit to et a better sight acquisition for older eyes and a better sight picture. Sorry I don't have the link but it was under Jim fuller or rifle dynamics.
 
Red Jacket built an AK sniper rifle on the show a few years back. It was a game changer. Give them a call and I'm sure they can hook you up.

Now on a good day off the rest my poly tech with golden tiger runs 4moa. That's as good as she gets. I got some close to 2moaxwith some lapua mat h ammo......off the bench your skills are the limitting factor on accuracy.
I found for best Ak fun is to make sure you can zero your rifle best as possible for your intentions. I like to shoot at 100 yards.
my rifle is set to shoot approx 3" high from point of aim Gets me close to the middle of a sr 1 target with a 6 o'clock hold. Shooting prone supported I can keep them in the black. Accuracy was low on the list. Mr M.K.. accurate enough to hit intended target yes but not "accurate" as consistant bullet placement. Also my polytech has a scope rail and the bkII style mount with my old luepold scope did very well.....just felt silly with a scope on a Ak.

What he said. You cannot "buy" accuracy. Drop some money on 1000 rounds and head to the range.

Why 1,000 rounds ? No its not some kinda majickal marksmanship acquisition number BUT it will give you a good enough supply of THE SAME KIND OF AMMO to practice with. In other words; consistent ammo. When I was with Appleseed I observed people coming to events with two, three or even four different manufacturers / gr weights of boolets with them. Then they'd get all frustrated when their POI shifted or their rifle malf'd.

While on the subject take that 1,000 rounds to an Appleseed and get a understanding of the fundamentals., then get another 1,000 rounds and shoot 100 or 200 yards. Full distance shooting is bit different from Appleseed, even if it is "only" 100 yards.

But for Pete's sake since you're having accuracy issues DO NOT SELF-TRAIN ! When you're doing it wrong and sucking, repeating the suck will only make you suck more then you'll get frustrated and start dumping more money into your rifle which will only make you suck even more. Then you'll sell your rifle and take up golf.

Or needlepoint. A good cross stitch is easier to develop. Just ask my wife.
