I'd appreciate hearing your recommendations for subsonic 22lr ammo with quietness and reasonable accuracy. I would be firing from a Savage Mark II with a 20" barrel (bolt action). Thanks!
CCI Standard Velocity clocks in just below supersonic and is extremely accurate. The speed of sound is about 1100 fps, depending on altitude. Most standard velocity or target ammo is 1040-1070 fps. Most manufacturers include the velocity on the box. Generally from an 18'-22" barrel. Shorter lengths will reduce velocities.
Actually, altitude, i.e., barometric pressure, is not an important factor, while temperature is. It's 1087 fps at 32º F, 1128 at 70º, 1150 at 90º, in dry air; so, yes, as Billsail say, about 1100 is a good number to use. I think you'd want to stay about 20% under that to be assured of the benefits, 'though Eley subsonic is spec'd at 1065; others like Aguila are around 950.
