I'm looking for something small, slim, and pretty light. Something along the lines of the Shield, but not the Shield.

What's your favorite available in Massachusetts and why?

Thanks in advance for your experiences.

If you really want a .40 why does it matter whether it's compliant or not? You can find virtually anything you want with a little luck in the classifieds.

Regardless, I'd probably go with either a Glock 23 or 27 if you're looking for something smaller. I've also heard good things about the PM40.

Really depends on your budget and definition of "compact".

My problem is I'm new to semi-autos and I don't know what's available new in our state. I guess you're suggesting I can buy anything used from someone in Mass? I suppose the list is only related to guns that are sold new?

Guns that are on the list and that the AG doesn't dissapprove will be easier to find than things that aren't, but with a little effort, and a willingness to sometimes spend a bit more than you'd have to in any other state, you can get just about anything.

I just found this really cool site for narrowing down what you're looking for called "gunfinder." I don't know if it's up to date with the latest stuff, though. I don't see the Shield here.

Walther PPS? Almost identical in size.
I'm waiting for the shield, but that's a good alternative

I took a look at one and hated the magazine eject bar.

I picked up a Kahar PM40 and it felt alright, though I don't really want one with a manual safety.

Most compliant and not overpriced, good trigger and concealable. Ruger sr40c its not a bad piece at all if you can get past the flaming gay safeties.

That said id still strongly consider the g27 not that hard at all to find. You wont lose your money if you resell it.

I need to check a Glock 27 in person. Maybe a Gen 4 would be comfortable in my hand.

I noticed the HK USP is on the list, too. I'm not sure if it's small as I'm looking for, though. I don't really want a manual safety, and I don't get the sense that the Ruger semiautos are that well received, but I will look into it.

Do Sigs have good reputations? Actually, it doesn't appear they make a small .40 for concealment.
Sigs have been around forever, very accurate and dependable. The P226 is concealable, the p228 is the compact version. The p228 preban mags hold 13, the preban p226 mags fit perfectly and hold 15 rds of 9mm.
H&K also makes a USP compact in 40, all german made, a little pricey though but you get what you pay for.
I have had all the glocks since the early 90's, great guns but I always end up carrying my Sigs for protection.

Well, now that I've started to consider the size, and after holding a Kahr PM40 today, I really, really want a compact gun with a shorty barrel. I seriously want something 6 inches in overall length or under, but it looks like all the .40 options are longer than that. Maybe I should just go with a 9mm?

Try looking at the S&W CS40 or a 4013- 3rd gen S&W auto.
Shoots great and carries nice. You may not like the recoil from a PM40 if you have not shot one.

The HK USP is ****ing gigantic. [laugh] (As someone who has owned like, 6 of them, I think I can make this statement and not get in too much trouble. )

I agree, I have owned a full size USP with bunch of pre ban mags for years. It is handful but I love to shoot it, very accurate.

Either my S&W40c or my Glock23 both feel comfortable carried year round, most important thing though is like the old American Express commercial: Near leave home without it

Are you looking for a full 3 finger grip or will you make do with two?

I would make do with two if it handled nicely while shooting.

I have the M&P .40c, and it's too big. I wouldn't carry that daily.

My Sig 229 is decent and is compact. I suppose it depends on your preference of what is, "compact".

Nice thing about the G27 is you can vary the level of concealment somewhat based on magazine selection. You can carry an extended or flush baseplate in the gun and carry a 15 round extra. Have been carrying a PM45, but am going to go back to the G27 for the additional capacity.

I appreciate everyone's input. It's looking like if I want a pistol as small as I want for daily carry, I will likely go with a Kahr. I may even consider the PM9 9mm. I will have to do some research.

Or, in the end, it may be the Shield. I just want something that won't need a trigger job.

"Most" Massachusetts compliant guns "if bought new" WILL need a trigger job!
