What's your favorite MA compliant compact .40 caliber pistol?

I appreciate everyone's input. It's looking like if I want a pistol as small as I want for daily carry, I will likely go with a Kahr. I may even consider the PM9 9mm. I will have to do some research.

Or, in the end, it may be the Shield. I just want something that won't need a trigger job.

I have carried a G23, M&P 40c, G26, and PM9. I prefer the G23 in winter and G26(same frame as G27)/PM9 in summer. The PM9 is definately smaller (slimmer) than the G26, and thus more concealable, but I shoot the G26 more accurately as there is more gun to hold onto.

Based on the fact that you are looking for something concealable, I think that you are on the right track with the PM9/40 and G26/27 choices.

I've gotta throw my chips in for the Glock 27. I've carried one for about 6 months now in just about every type of clothing and it has worked great. I have a leather owb holster and a whitehat iwb. It works great with both depending on what I'm wearing. Also carry an extra mag. I think Glock got it right on the balance between ammo capacity, size, and concealability for an every day carry pistol.

I love my Ruger SR40C. Great sights and it fits in the same crossbreed holster I had for my SR9C. Extremely controllable recoil and I've literally fallen asleep on the couch for hours with it on and totally forgotten it's there. Sure the safeties and loaded flag are about as flamboyant as they get.. but it's under my shirt. I care much more about comfort.

I'll be in the minority and suggest a Steyr S40-a1, not quite as small as some of the other mentioned compacts, but the trigger more than makes up for it. It by far has the best trigger out of any gun mentioned in this thread.

40 cal is what I carry [wink]

I have the G23 and G27. My crossbreed supertuck holster holds both fine. you might as well carry the G23 as it holds more ammo than the G27. As you are in mass, you are probably regulated to a 10 round mag anyway????

If you put the extended finger grip on the G27 it is VIRTUALLY almost the same size as the 23. yes it is a tad smaller but i doubt you will tell the difference if you are carrying it. (i am talking with the extended grip on the mag). I have medium to large hands and I shoot better with the 23 because of the abilty to hold onto more gun

since you are in mass and pickins may be slim for glocks at reasonable prices, I would go with either

I carry a mp40c and since it is my only compact 40 I suppose it is my favorite.

Hi there, new to the forum and to guns. Could you elaborate on that statement? I've just finished the basic safety course and am lookign into what might be my first purchase, and thought that i had narrowed it down to the p226, glock, or maybe s-w.

Are glocks a no go in MA?

Thanks for the help!

New glocks can't be sold in MA through an FFL ( some may sell regardless of compliance or not, I don't know one) You can get 1 in a ftf (private in state) transaction. Because of this you will see the MA surcharge drive the price of glocks in MA up considerably. Of course with the right research and patience you can usually find what you are looking for.

There are more technicalities but this is the basics.

I have the H&K USP 40 Compact and I love it. It is my favorite out of all the handguns I own and I carry it all the time.
You can carry it cocked and locked, or drop the hammer down and carry it double action.
Sigs have been around forever, very accurate and dependable. The P226 is concealable, the p228 is the compact version. The p228 preban mags hold 13, the preban p226 mags fit perfectly and hold 15 rds of 9mm.
H&K also makes a USP compact in 40, all german made, a little pricey though but you get what you pay for.
I have had all the glocks since the early 90's, great guns but I always end up carrying my Sigs for protection.

I have the M&P .40c, and it's too big. I wouldn't carry that daily.

I think if you want to carry a tiny gun, maybe .40 isn't the best caliber? The snappy recoil makes it a bit annoying to control fast follow-up shots compared to a 9mm which really shines in small guns. Just IMO.

I've got an M&P 40c with trigger job and like it a lot. Some day I'll get a 357sig barrel for it...

I think you're right. I've decided to go with a 9mm. There are a lot more options in that caliber for a reason.

Nice gun, I carry mine in my front pocket in the summer.

Saw two of the first Shields in southeastern mass leave a gun store just the other day. One actually had a nice trigger it was a show model w/o the mass trigger lol. They will be fetching top dollar until the market gets a good supply. I myself own a Kahr PM40 but with no safeties to get in the way. I carry it everyday and don't notice its there anymore. I am used to the trigger and its real accurate. For inexpensive (half the price of a Kahr) and in 9mm the Ruger lc9 is quite popular think it even has double strike which some people prefer. I would never carry one though...my uncle brought his (one of the first they shipped to mass) to the range with me a couple times. It had a tendency to soft strike certain ammo. Maybe the later models are better but watching a compact carry gun soft strike was a complete turn off.

"Most" Massachusetts compliant guns "if bought new" WILL need a trigger job!

This is not true of the Ruger SR40c, unlike the S&W Shield which always needs a APEX kit to fix the trigger, or Wather pps which is way past 10lb. pull, no trigger job is needed and the price is better. Another plus is Ruger's customer service which is 2nd to none... I resurrected this thread because it is still a viable topic, just forgotten.

This is my first post and I am new to guns in general. Im waiting for my LTC right now. I have joined MFS in Holliston and have been shooting every Hand gun they have. Especially the compact 9mm's. So far I have compared the SR9C, Shield, M&P 40C, Glock 26 and 19. Revolvers and full sized.

My favorite by far is the Shield. Even the SR9C feels like a tank to me. I want to CC and the Shield is just so thin. I want to shoot a XDS but it looks uncomfortable.

Last Friday I tried the SR9C and Shield back to back. The SR9C has a lighter trigger but more uptake. The Shield has almost no uptake but a hard pull and break very snappy. I like the break it feels crisper to me. I shoot the shield better to. It just fits me ergonomically. The SRC feels like a much heavier and bigger gun. The width is what stood out the most to me.

How come the Shield gets so much hate on here?

Also how come a .40? Just curious.
