When did the S&W 686 firing pin change?

Does anyone know when the 686 went from a hammer mounted pin to a frame mounted one.

I am trying to date a possible trade and have narrowed the date to between 1988 and 1994.

Also are 686's from this time good to go or should I look for newer? It is a beautiful 2” barrel with wood grips.

No I don't have the SN.
