Which HK would you get?

Mike, (drgrant) can and likely will fill you in on all the details. What I have noticed is a better trigger, adjustable sights and a threaded barrel. I have the HK USP45f and in it's stock form, is just a superb pistol. The trigger is really, really nice. I guess in the end, it will be up to you whether adjustable sights a slightly better trigger and a threaded barrel are worth it to you. For me, the USP45 is just perfect the way it is. If I wind up moving to a free-state, I'll likely add a tac-barrel, as this pup is begging for a can....[wink]

Kind of off topic question. I've seen several people on posts talking about getting HKs. What are these guns like? Are they very good and what differentiates them from other big players? I'm just curious because I usually hear the best guns are Sigs, S&W, Colts, etc. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I might be moving back to Mass soon. Would the threaded barrel on the tactical be legal in Mass?

Threaded barrel is no problem....

This is just personal opinion - folks around here get their panties in a wad when you proclaim that your gun might, just might be better than theirs. The Glock folks jump in all defensive about their grenades and then 1911 guys hop in and re-proclaim John Moses Browning as a God...So, in my personal opinion the HK USP45 is superior to any .45ACP pistol out there...HK's are just built to a higher standard, robust, reliable, accurate, overbuilt. Everything just plain works. The DA/SA action is sublime, great trigger, great feel, instinctive mag release. It's also hard to argue with 13-rounds of 45ACP on deck...The running story about the USP45, is that HK was asked to take a 1911 and make it better....On the 8th day, God created the HK USP45...[wink]

The match grade trigger is really worth it. I have a .40 USP, and it is in bad need of a trigger job!

I've owned Glocks and Sigs in the past but now all I own is HKs and 1911s. My HK45f is rapidly becoming my favorite firearm.

I'm assuming you can't have the 13-rounds in MA? What do you think of the USP45 compact?

One of these days I'm gonna have to try an HK. Just don't know if I can pony up the price premium for them. Stupid MA laws.

Get a regular USP if you're going to carry it.

Get the Tac if it's just going to be a range toy. Otherwise you will be changing the sights out on it in short order (like I did) and the threaded barrel will make the gun longer than it needs to be.

The Tac will have a better trigger (at least if it's a .40/.45) but the difference is not night and day, main thing is the tac has an overtravel stop in the trigger and a different hammer arrangement. That having been said the regular USP is usually a way better value proposition. (The price difference is often $100-200 or more between a regular one and a tac. ) The regular old USP will also sell faster if you need to sell it, whereas tacs tend to sit around awhile because the market is smaller.

MAKE SURE you can hold the gun in your hand first. If you have tiny hands you will not like the USP. Mine are rarely big enough to hold the gun properly. If you have oven mitts for hands you'll probably love it. [grin]

Also get the Wolff 12 lb mainspring for it, for either version. This will reduce the DA pull somewhat and make it more pleasant. It is trivial to swap the factory spring out.

The match trigger kit helps but it is not a cure all. I have a USP Tac and I still have to get a breakdown guide for it so I can rip it apart and polish the appropriate parts. I did it with my USP40 years ago and it came out superb. Most of this is all for the DA trigger anyways. Did you get a Wolff 12 lb mainspring? You should get that and go from there.

I have the standard USP in .40 and I love it. The trigger's not perfect, but it's still nice. My only other complaint is that it's not a .45...

Not to hi- jack this thread or anything but it seems like an appropriate forum to ask these questions . . . i live in mass and I REALLY want a usp45 again but if i can i'd like to do it on the cheap . . . how can i identify on the "open market" a pre 98 HK or if thats not the standard, or to keep it all legal like (so i can have hi caps) pre 09/93 . . . is there an serial pre fix as glocks have? is there a good web site for this type of info? . . . feel free to pm and thanks for your time...

The importation pre-98 wallhack "doesn't work" for .45 HK's in MA as none of them are on the EOPS roster. Sorry. You either have to buy one an MA dealer has for sale (which is probably papered exempt) or buy one on an FTF (Private Sale). Bear in mind that handgun compliance is irrelevant for anyone but a licensed dealer in MA... so it's not your problem regardless. Preban (EG, Pre 9/13/94 AW ban) "normal capacity" mags are available for the USP series pistols but they are very, very hard to find on average. The .45s are pretty much unobtainium. See more topics in the MA gun laws subforum for more info on all this crap. There is a whole compliance faq there as well.

is there a good web site for this type of info? . . . feel free to pm and thanks for your time...

You're already on it. [laugh]

The HK USP45f was put to market post-'94' - however it was introduced before, (gun mags, test guns for writers, leos, military etc), a couple of enterprising fellows also knew that HK did not manufacture their own magazines and imported a bunch, (as in a big bunch), before HK got wind of it and put the hammer down...So, there are 12rd mags out there - one just has to find them....

The HK USP45c is just simply a superb carry gun...Me want. I do however carry my USPf constantly and it's surprisingly easy to do so....

Yeah, I've been meaning to get around to working on it. I will try the mainspring.. Otherwise, I love the gun.

I don't have any HK in 45.. I am jealous.. But, to throw my 2cents in the ring.
My full size usp 45 was by far the best shooting 45 I ever had and I am sorry that I sold it. Also, I think you might find there to be some Mass ok full caps out there for it.
If CC is the game, I'd opt for the 45c as low caps are standard you won't run into the issues there and it should be small enough to carry.

And I agree w/Dr Grant on resale. The standard models are by far more desirable resale wise, if that is a consideration.

All I can say is I have an HK45 and I like it a lot. I've only had a chance to put 100 rounds through it or so and it's very accurate.
