Your New Knife!

Enbloc would know the answer :-( (miss him) Are spring-assisted knives legal for us ma**h***s to carry out in public (as opposed to the the confines of our homes)?
I'm interested in the Benchmade Mini Barrage.
thanks!

My understanding from a layman's reading of the MGL (269-10-b?) is you can own autos but not carry. The exception being under 1.5". I think that section also addresses spring assisted and draw knives.

Lots of folders have a feature that is commonly called the “Emerson wave” feature (google it) which is essentially a nub that you snag on your pocket when pulling the knife out. It pulls the blade open and is faster than an auto and easier than a spring assist.
Ive been looking at one of those for a bit of time.
Have yet to pull the trigger on it though.

My understanding is that the same is true for Emerson Wave knives, since they deploy on drawing. Which is too bad because I’ve got a couple Delicas with the wave.

MA knife laws are almost as stupid as MA gun laws.

My understanding also in MA you can't have a double edge knives ? I remember a long time ago being in a knife store and a off duty cop telling the owner to put those (double edge knives )away , it was 30 years ago , just curious if the law still the same?.

Never get legal advice from a Cop.

I believe they are only illegal to carry, not illegal to own.

Just shoot any would-be perpetrator -- of course in this state Commie $hithole (MA) that is where your problems will begin -- you'll become the perpetrator and the Ghetto Thug will be a good boy who was just turning his life around. The only guy who will benefit will be the costly Philadelphia lawyer you'll need to hire in order clear your name (and maybe get your LTC back).

Best advice : move to a free state with strong Castle laws.

With how good current folders are these days, spring assisted knives are obsolete. Most decent folders can open as or nearly as fast as a spring assist but absolutely crush them as far as closing goes, which is where spring assist knives are garbage.
I must say I agree 100% with this. I learned the hard way and purchased several spring assist knives and while yes they open fast they are clunky to close and take a bit more manipulation.

It’s something I didn’t really pay attention to until I got a benchmade without spring assist and once broken in I can flick it open as fast as spring assist and close it as fast as I open it.

My cold steel folders aren’t as fast as the benchmade to close but still quick and easy once practiced.
I don’t think I’d ever buy a spring assist knife again.

got a few new knives recently. an akm 10" made in italy stiletto, faux ivory handles, d2 steel w/ss liners and pins. next, 3 otf knives. the large spear point has a 4" blade, d2 steel and the large drop point has a 3 3/4" blade and 440c blade. both have a non slip coating on the handle. the last little otf is a d2 steel, 2.4" blade "stinger". all blades fire with authority out the front and don't seem to suffer from that horrible wobble otf knives exhibit a lot of the time. i honed all 3 otf knives to hair shaving sharpness. scary sharp. the last one is a japanese friction folder made by the last manufacturer left of a knife guild that originally made these knives upon inception in the late 1800's and the only ones allowed by law to use the original name. other makers can imitate the knife but have to use a bastardised version of the original name. just tool steel and simple materials. not an expensive knife. very rust prone. as you can probably tell, 2 serve a very definite purpose while the last 3 are edc and are used daily.

I never handled a microtech before so figured what the hell, I'll try one out. I went with the UTX-85 because it seemed like a good size and the price wasn't too bad compared to some of their other stuff. It's a nice knife and I like it but I'm not in love with it. In hindsight I wish I went with the regular size ultratech, or bought another ZT. I'll hang on to it but for the money I think there's better options.

Ok, so after a few days playing with the UTX-85 I couldn't let go of the feeling that I wish I bought the ultratech instead. I spent 3 nights and the better part of a bottle of bourbon to numb the pain in my wallet searching the interwebs and I finally found a merlot ultratech tanto at a small shop in TX. IMO the ultratech is the perfect size and the one I should have bought in the first place. The action also feels better than the UTX-85, I'm guessing because of the added mass of the larger blade. The deploy and release are much more snappy and crisp on the ultratech. I think I'm done with microtech, I got my feet wet. That's a rabbit hole I don't want to go down but Im happy I grabbed the ultratech in this configuration, It's a keeper.

Just had a good feeling when I saw this Enbloc thread pop up. Clicked on it automatically to see what he had to say. Then felt stupid and sad because I momentarily forgot he was gone…..:(
Ya, I feel ya. It's not the same here without him. Really is the first time I've been so sad to lose someone I never met, he was the shit.

I'm sure he'd be happy to know that he's still alive in our hearts and minds.

I did the same thing - saw his avatar thingie and got excited, and remembered while clicking.
:(

ETA: Who won the Enbloc Tribute Knife Karma. - Lost track of it so, I guess it wasn't me.
hahaha

I’m pretty sure Mike (Dgrant) won it.
That lucky sumbitch. 🤩

I’ve never been interested in OTF autos. Not sure why. Those do look sharp though.

I suppose my lack of interest in them may have to do with the fact decent OTF’s are a boat load of coin.
Thanks, ya I agree. For the money I think there's definitely better value out there in some of the folders. I just wanted to see what the OTF fuss was all about. Now that my feet are wet I think I'm good. I don't regret it, at least with microtech you can get most of your money back on resale if they're not beat up. I will say though I would pass on the utx-85 and 70 for first time purchase and go with the OG ultra tech, based on my experience/opinion.

With the new flippers like Elementium, my spring assisted are bottom of the knife drawer. Weight, overall effort, and thickness are all better with modern flippers IMP

Well, I lost another knife. I have a bad habit of putting my knives into my wife’s purse at security checkpoints, because they never really check pocketbooks thoroughly. Last week I put my knife into my wife’s purse at the casino. Fast forward to today she had a last minute trip to New York for work and forgot it was in there. Long story short, the TSA confiscated it. MF’rs!!! Benchmade Osborne gone! :(

Don't they still give you the option to mail it?
