3 rounds to put down a raccoon?

Couple years ago we had an apparently rabid raccoon here in our neighborhood. I shot it once in the head with a 9mm. DNR told me afterwards that if we needed to know if it was rabid or not, not to shoot it in the head because they need to look at the brain.

So, perhaps the office shot it in the body. I have NO idea where a racoon's heart is. That's why I shot it in the head.

Shot placement, is king.

The lethal areas are very small on a raccoon.

Hitting just in the right spot with a handgun is not easy.

Also, the goal is not just death, but HUMANE death. I killed a rabid raccoon with a Glock about 15 years ago. I couldn't tell you how many shots it took, but it was more than 1. I can also tell you that the last shot was coup de grås to the head from close range.

Last time I had to deal with something like that it was just 1 10mm to the head

I put them down all the time with just a single 22LR to the head out of a ruger wrangler. They die in under 5 seconds every time. If the shot is off a bit it might take a second shot. And they’re dead in under 10.

Many of you have very little knowledge of dispatching a wild animal. In the years of a good fur market, I put an average 50 raccoons a year on the stretchers many took more than one shot. So, when you leave the comfort of the urban world you will see that it is not all as you think it is.

It's in the same place as every other mammal. ;)

When I put trapped raccoons down I dump all ten rounds of .22LR into them because that's what the magazine holds.

I have popped a few with a single 55gr 5.56mm from 35y when they were raiding the pig feeder.

I've done multiple hits just so they die quickly. Only reason.
Groundhogs usually.
One got treed by the dog. Who knew they could climb? One shot knocked it out of the tree and the second stopped the twitching. Tough shot.
I had to fight the dog off to take it.

it's Lexington.......First time this guy has ever fired his gun!!
FU. 😂
Carlisle. Had one come into the maintenance garage one day and it hissed definitely at the wrong guy shooing it along. A short walk and upon my return it started again. Hit him solid with 3, 45’s 185g HP’s at close range to shut it up.

I had a LEO friend tell me he’s killed more deer in Carlisle than any hunter could imagine. 😂

Nice humble brag on being able to dome a racoon

They are tough bastards .
More than once I've seen them get shot , fall 30-40 feet to the ground and come up swinging.
Take on the hounds and us.

Damn, some of you guys are weak. I call Mrs Watchman over and she kills them with her evil eye contact I save lots of ammo for the range this way.

lol I killed 5 in a week last summer that were trying to break into my chicken coop. a single shot to the back of the head with a 22lr did it every time.
