38 revolver suggestions

I second the S&W Model 10. If you can't find a gun shop that has state prison trade-in's for $200-$250, you ain't shopping at the right places.

Bingo. I recently bought a Model 64 (the stainless Model 10) from one of the guys here. It's a former cop gun with some dings and scratches, but it shoots as straight as a laser and the trigger is sweet. They're harder to find in MA because of the BS law against transferring handguns from out of state, but they do exist. There are stout .38 loads available from Corbon, Buffalo Bore and others, so the .38's don't give away much in practical defensive capability to the .357.
Edit: You're in NH - if you can't find one locally, look in Shotgun News at some of the big wholesalers' ads and have one shipped to your favorite FFL.
