A chaotic predawn shootout outside a Jersey City apartment building between a shotgun-wielding suspect and the police left five officers wounded — two critically, including one shot in the face — and two suspects dead, according to the Jersey City mayor, Jerramiah Healy, who spoke at a news conference in Jersey City.

Five police officers were taken to New Jersey Medical Center with gunshot wounds in what Mayor Healy called a “terrible gunfight,” and several others sustained injuries relating to the fight.

The officer who had been shot in the face had no signs of life when he was brought in, officials said, but was revived, said doctors at the Jersey City Medical Center. He remained in extremely critical condition.

The other police officer in critical condition was hit in the neck and was in surgery.

Of the other officers injured, one was hit in the vest, another in the arm, and another was grazed in the leg by a bullet and already released.

Gunfire erupted just after 5 a.m. outside an apartment on 24 Reed Street near Bergen Avenue, where the two suspects had already been under investigation by the police. According to another Jersey City law official who requested anonymity, the two people dead are suspected of conducting a robbery in Jersey City with shotguns in June.

One of the suspects had come out of the apartment carrying a shotgun and ammunition and “ready for war,” said the Jersey City police chief, Tom Comey, and when the police officers approached him, the suspect opened fired.

The suspect retreated into the apartment, and the officers called for emergency backup. About an hour later, with building evacuated, a team of heavily armed emergency service officers went in, and the shootout erupted. The police chief said at least one shotgun blast was fired through a wall or door.

“These individuals were sought by our department,” Chief Comey said. “This individual came to us fully ready to go to war with us. That weapon was meant to hunt nothing other than men.”

insane. the chief sounds like an anti....

"That weapon was meant to hunt nothing other than men.”

I think that means that the shotgun was black.

Sorry for the officers lost and/or wounded in the line of duty :(

Weapons hunt? Do they need a license and a hunter safety course? Otherwise I'll just tell my shotguns not to come home without a deer.

Isn't that what some criminals do? Does the Cheif expect all of them to open the door, put their hands out and help the arresting officer put on the cuffs?

Wow, I was just about a mile from there yesterday. We went to the Statue of Liberty, and decided to take the ferry from the NJ side, to avoid the crowds.

When we got to the end of the ferry line, there was airline style security, and I forgot that I had a pepper spray device on my keychain (it is a long aluminum cylinder, looks like a flashlight, I've been carrying it for five years). The policeman there confiscated my pepper spray. He demanded, all angry, twice, "Why do you have this? Why do you have this?". I swear I wanted to ask him "why do you think, you cretin?" but I just said "self defense". I suppose only the police need self defense in Jersey City? The tourists can just take their own chances.

I am continually baffled as to where anyone reads a right to hunt animals enumerated in the constitution?

Or "hunt" at all?

The right enumerated is to keep and bear arms. The purpose (as with all arms) is not to "kill", but to protect...

I recently broached the topic of gun control with an old colleague during a discussion about the nature of our system of government, and he was under the complete impression that the 2nd Amendment exists because of wild Indians and the need to hunt deer for food.

It's not like he's an anti, he's just completely ignorant. It's really easy to be ignorant of something if you don't care enough to educate yourself.

Heck, before I got into guns 2 years ago, I actually thought that it was illegal for a citizen to own a gun... and I didn't have a problem with that. I thought it was a bummer, but it didn't affect me much. Then I started reading and it was all downhill from there.

Of course the paper and police failed to identify if the suspects had a legal right to possess firearms--- I think we all know the answer to this one[angry]

I think that's a reasonable comment. I think he was referring to the perp's intentions, not to the design of the gun.

I'm glad the weapon that was used was something the FUDDS think is harmless and protected. Maybe they can get a taste of the shit we go through.

It may be a reasonable comment assuming the perp was using a combat shotgun (but I still disagree with the wording), but I definitely don't see how you could construe that the cop was not talking about the weapon itself in that statement.

Again, I don't think the comment had anything to do with the design of the gun. It may be that the COP is a hoplophobe, but you can't tell that from the statement.

I read it as "this guy wanted to kill us. He was hunting cops."

I'm fully willing to concede he m.y have meant something else but without further context it's impossible to know.

That was my take as well. I read it a couple times and it sounded like he was talking about the gun at that moment. And, at that moment, the perp sure wasn't looking for any deer.

What would stand for a "Normal shotgun". I also would like to see pictures of this Man Hunting, not Normal shotgun. I bet it just had a pistol grip. [grin]

yup.

what if it had wood grain?

again, anyone can hunt with anything, hence i'm no fan of the "hunting comoflaugh" anything, as if it makes them any less deadly [rolleyes].

like camo AR from Remington, or the camo Benelli's, or the camo "deer rifles"... you can take a Remington 700, paint it and it's a "hunting rifle" - yet the same rifle in all-black is called "tactical" or police [rolleyes]
