Advice on concealed carry pistol

Looking at the list, it appears they aren't legal in MA am I wrong? Please ignore my "stupidity" on the laws but isn't it illegal to buy that even through the classified?

I see that Glocks are on the approved list but I've read it doesn't comply with the AG regulations. How is it legal to buy them? These friggin laws are so damn confusing!!!!!

Those regs only apply to what a dealer can sell, and have nothing to do with what you can legally purchase or own, except for AWB issues. FTF transfers don't have to be on the 'list'. That's why the comment that you'd have to get it through the classifieds.

ETA - ya beat me to it [wink]

I found a dealer who has one so I imagine it's a pre-ban Glock then.

Even if it isn't, that's on their ***, not yours. So long as it's not an "assault weapon" or a "post -ban high-capacity magazine" and you are properly licensed, you can buy pretty much whatever they are willing to sell you.

Thank you for the advice.

Will the metal part of the mag be seen?

Not if you are carrying it concealed..... [grin] I have large hands and carry my MP40c, I have used the full sized mags in my compact at the range and it gives me the same grip feel as my FS 40. I have gotten accustomed to my compact mags, as I love my M&P's, even though my pinky tends to scrap for a secure spot... I just came from my LGS and checked out the Rugers, I can easily see the diff is the finger rest on the magazine. Someone needs to make a finger plate like the Ruger has for the M&P... [grin] I am filling in an FA10 as I type this, just bought my friends LC9, trigger sucks, but it's slimmer and the price was right... reeeeeally cheap, he didn't like the way it feels, he loves his MP40c... [grin]

So I checked out a Glock 27, Warthog ACP .45, Sig 226 229 and the PPS. It seems that if I go with a compact I am going to have similar issues with my pinky. I am going to keep my S&W 9mm and perhaps look for something in the full size that's a bit lighter. I'm not giving up but I think in order to meet my needs that may be the way to go.

Anyone have experience with the Glock 27 compact? Someone recommended it to me and I'm going to take a look at one hopefully.

I'm an LEO in CT and I've carried the same Glock 27 for the last 15 years both off-duty and on some plainclothes assignments. It's a fantastic handgun and I've had zero problems with its performance or with concealing it.

Whatever you do stay the hell away from that Para Craphog. It's pretty much the worst POS ever made.

That's too bad, it's a nice looking handgun and it felt good in my hand. Does that sentiment go for the rest of the Para line?

In my experience, yes. Get a S&W E-series instead. The Ruger 1911 is too new for anyone to have long-term experience with it yet, but it looks like it may be a very good alternative.

One thing in the Ruger's favor is that it is actually made of obtanium. (E-series guns are hard to come by, in MA or elsewhere. ) The guys I know who have the rugers so far, seem to like them. If Ruger keeps up the quality they are going
to clean up the low end of the 1911 market with that gun.

If I had an extra $700 sitting around I would be buying one of those Rugers. I like my dad's E-series, too, but even if I wanted to get one I'd be hunting around for awhile just to find one.

Unlike the S&W, Ruger's 1911 uses standard Colt-style dovetails for the sights. I agree that if Ruger's quality is there, they are going to clean up.

I believe you'll be seeing more of the E series around Ma now that they really are "officially" on the "list". I was up to S&W retail store and range last week, they had several E's in stock and several of the range and store personel had them hanging in their holsters. I found one in my LGS last month and for the price, under $800.00, I had to take it home along with a new Lew Horton SW1911 Pro series ... If you're looking for a compact, check out the Pro Series SW..

Of course theirs are in stock, because they're probably $100+ or more overpriced. (S&W has an internal policy of not competing with their distributors and gun shops). Everywhere else (even outside of MA) the E-series is hard to come by... it has nothing to do with the list, it has to do with the fact that S&W isn't making enough of the guns to keep the channel full. It's a good problem for them to have, of course... because it means the gun is selling well! [laugh]

I guess I'll be the lone voice of support for the Warthog. I know, and have heard, about all the nightmare stories concerning this gun, and yet it has been the most reliable handgun I've ever owned, period. I don't know if I was just very lucky or what, but the gun shoots like a dream and has never failed to fire or had any issues whatsoever (besides the poor coating which scratches easily). That said, I do realize that I was very fortunate to end up with a functioning one, I can only go by personal experience. I love the Warthog I own, I don't know that I would suggest it knowing the varied experiences of other buyers and based on the price point.

Yep, definitely selling well. The retail store did not have them in stock because they were not on the approval list that counted. That was right from the mouth of the Retail store manager. I know they were being sold in some stores in Ma, but other stores around here didn't sell them because of the above statement and something about having sku Ma legal numbers... You might be surprised at the prices at the store in person. The prices on the website are higher and they have some discount incentives available if ya fit the bill... [wink]
Have a Happy Holiday,

Not sure if I've asked about HK's but how are those? What about a used Springfield Armory XD series (if I can find one)?

I have 2 older XD40's, one in service sized, and one Subcompact size. They are blocky and top heavy, shoot well and fit in the hand well, but not my first choice to carry. The subcompact carries easily, but doesn't give you anything a baby glock offers at more reasonable prices, plus the ability to carry a hicap spare.

Meh. I've got an HK USPc .45. I had a .40, sold it.

The slide is stupidly large. The USPc is significantly larger than a Glock 19/23. It has a higher bore axis. It seems to me to have a lot of muzzle flip. The slide stop is generously sized and in the right place. I'm not a fan of the magazine release. The SA trigger is OK at best. The DA trigger requires two men and a come-along to pull -- it is just stupid. The safety/decocker is in the right place and works in the right direction.

All in all, I'm not that impressed.

Try one of these... I love mine... awsome to CCW, it's light, compact with a 3" barrel and a tad shorter grip than a full size, but definitely allows for a good grip and the best part, nothing like having 45acp for PD..[grin]

I have 2 XDs a compact in .45 I cc daily and a subcompact 9mm my wife carries. They are kind of hard to find and when you do a used one is often more that a new one. If you want feel free to try mine out. See how it fits you how you like shooting it. I have a Crossbreed holster if you want to try that too.

I'm not a fan of 3" 1911s - a 4" will conceal just as well and give you much needed sight radius.

Sorry, 4" is bigger than 3"... anyway you hide it... I have 2 4" 1911's, have no problem carrying them either, I like the 3" better. As for sight radius, sounds great on paper if you're target shooting at 25yds. At 21ft, the max we should ever have to use it to defend ourselves, the bad guy is dead!! On my 3" Pro, I also lose about an 1\2" off the grip. In all honesty, the bigger the better, I just fell in love with this 3" as soon as I picked it up and after shooting it, I really love it so much, I barely carry my M&P40c.... I like the 1911 bling. [smile], here's one of my 4" Sc's..

i was interested in how the XD subcompact 9 shoots, any advice?

I don't carry my 1911's much, but if I were to go back to carrying single stacks, it would be one of those CCO models. Sight radius and handling of a Commander, concealability of an Officer.

When carrying in an IWB holster, it isn't the barrel which is hard to conceal -- the barrel is stuffed in your pants. The part that you have to work at to conceal is the grip. As a result, a compact 1911 (4 or 41/4 in barrel and an officers grip) is just as easy to conceal as an officers model (3" barrel and officers grip).

Personally, though, I've gone to carrying a full size government model.
