Do they make AK kits similar to AR kits?... I have seen some but they look much more involved than the AR kits.

Where should I start?

YouTube is the best place to start.

Building an AK is much more involved than building an AR. I've read about people doing builds with hammers, punches, and anvils, and you can get by with a limited set of tools but those methods are for experienced builders that want to say they did it that way.

For the less hack builds you need jigs and a press.

I had read that a built gun avoids many bans and just having the lower should a ban come into play swith the parts over to the built lower and turn in the purchased lower and you are set. That being said it was about an AR but wouldn't the same principle apply or is that very different with an AK? I would like to build an AR lower or more but would like to throw together a AK once just because but they appear to be less precise in build and is there a milled option like the AR or only stamped?

That.

AK's are a project, and not something you can throw together in your boxers and slippers while drunk on cheap beer, like an AR, if you don't know what you are doing. Building an AK requires fire breath from vodka, chest hair, brute force, blood, and not caring so much when it doesn't come out perfectly.

My first AK was rusted to the point it would not cycle for the last 9 months because I shot a bunch of corrosive ammo in the rain and then left it in my humid basement. I beat the piss out of it the other day and all is well. It has a nice orange patina on it in places now, and it looks awesome. Truly one of my favorite rifles.

or just LOL at any bans and have fun anyways.

You throw together an AR. You have to build an AK. Big differences in the "build" process.

On second thought, if you plan to turn in anything in the future, just sell your guns now and buy some pink moscato, the sex in the city box set, and call it a night.

ak build tools cost more than ak you are planning to build.

Assuming that you are not going to borrow any tools from friends, I think the minimum that you absolutely have to have is the hydraulic press, a pair of bolt-cutter rivet tools, and a set of headspace guages. Depending on the quality of finish you are looking for, you'll need better rivet tools, but I was able to build several with just these.

The 12 ton Harbor Freight press ($129 or less) is probably bare minimum. It is a sloppy, frustrating piece of junk, but it does the job. I gave mine away to my dad after I finished my fourth build.

The $12 Harbor Freight 18" bolt cutters can be modified with an angle grinder and dremel to do the short rivets. It takes some trial and error to get the rivets to come out somewhat clean, but it works.

And you do not want to install the barrel without headspace guages.

The rest of what I used, chunks of pipe, punches, dremel, drill press, I already had.

Then, of course, you see a deal like this (for free-states) and realize that dnepro-mike is absolutely right:

I've had a reciever from a group buy collecting dust for the last year. Don't really know what I'm doing, nor where to find an appropriate kit. I'm open to suggestion!!

7.62, underfolder, must be crippled in MA or replace the rear trunnion and use a fixed stock: http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30127

rivets: http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29975 buy two sets if drinking.

So how does one get as good as Boris at making AK? Does it involve many drunken sex with Russian prostitute?

you must be russian for that. it's in his blood. they learn things in school as children that plenty of grown men in the US don't know. my mind was blown talking to him and comrade dnepro.

also boris prefers canadian prostitutes. ask about them. he'll tell you.

With out advice from Boris and flint I wouldn't of know what parts I'd need to buy for this mix match of a kit.

Ordered and Rep'd. Strong work.

The ak kits are more involved than ar builds I'm in the process of my first ak build. looking at the pile of parts can be a bit overwhelming but like flintoid told me read the build threads and watch videos as you see it going together picture yourself doing it. After spending some time reading build threads on here and some ak forums and watching YouTube videos I'm pretty confident going into my build. All I need is the rivet tools now and like people have said they aren't cheap ... With that being said

anyone have a rivet jig they'd like to rent for a short period of time

Any one got a cheap / free 7.62x39 bolt
Rear trunnion ?

i have a AK74 trunnion i cut the ears off of. you can rivet it in one place on a 47 and then do two tack welds. if you want to get weird.

good luck with that. guys generally don't rent these tools because eventually they go to shit. a jig isn't even %100 necessary, neither are the bolt cutter adapters. it can all be done without specialized tools. won't be pretty, but it can be done.

helps to have a drill press and shop press handy though-at the minimum.

I got the trigger tool and bolt cutters . Ill loan them out . Just lent them to some one for a ak74 build.
I'll take reps , beer, karma .
