AK Build Kits

Any one got a cheap / free 7.62x39 bolt
Rear trunnion ?

I have a rear trunnion that you can have. Before you celebrate, I think I f'ed it up while trying to drill out the rivets. I thought I was going slow enough and using enough oil, but I got to a point where the drill just wouldn't go any farther. I ended up buying a rear trunnion somewhere online for short money, probably less than I wasted on drill bits.

But if you want to give it a whirl, it is yours.

That's what I thought i was doing. I did three of these, no problem. Went through them like hard cheese. Then this fourth one kicked my ass.

I think I got my replacement trunnion from AK Builder:

I thought I got it for closer to $20, but I can't remember. It worked just fine with my crutch folder stock.

The worse is when you have a carbid drill break on you :(.
You start to drill it out from the other side so you can punch it out. The whole time you pray you don't have that drill bit break on you .

Having a punch to fit the trunnion allows you to drive out the rest of a rivet if you can support everything while beating on it.

As far as the tools to comlpete your build go, search the various ak forums and vendors. You can make all the tools yourself or buy them the choice is yours. With AK's you actually have to build them compared to just assembling an AR.

Which is funny since it's a peasant rifle, and the AR is supposedly used by more educated folks [wink]

Very true. AR's are more high tech vs the AK. Russia had to take a low tech approach with their lack of money and the mfg base of the west. Mikhail Kalashnakov "wanted to keep it simple" and he did. They put their money in the critical parts and left the rest. As of late Russia with their increased tech mfg base and money have started morphing the AK platform into tacticool AR competitor.

cracker please, low tech approach, lack of money ... [rolleyes] Soviets spent 10x more manpower researching paint for AK than Stoner had to design that flimsy aluminum abomination.

don't compare for-profit business trying to make as much money as possible, as quickly as possible with a large team of hard core, Phd-ed combat vets who would lay their lives for the mere glory of Motherland, never mind meager salary.

To this day, Russian grunts aren't trusted with a set of socks and wear boots with ****ing mullenium old leg wraps. The "high tech tacticool" is for plump American basement dwellers who beg to be separated from their money in search of new blingy purchases.

My first AR lower was assembled on my coffee table with a pair of channel locks while watching football and drinking Coors Light. An AK? Not so much.

******, please.

My 2nd AK was assembled on my TV stand with a ****ing hammer, a bunch of cheap ass beer, and my enormous cock. I did use my coffee table to hold my beers, though. So I guess I used ****ing two pieces of home furniture for the build.

any fudge packing keebler elf can assemble an AR. NES/ARFCOM is proof positive of these factual statements.

Why does everyone skip the part where I said if you don't know what you are doing? You can literally not know the first thing about putting an AR together, but after 10 minutes on youtube you are a ninja AR builder. Not the case with an AK.

I ain't no rocket scientist. I can type double u double u double u dot g oh oh g ell ee and press return. I can also hold a hammer in my left and right hands, and I can also pick it up because I'm not a ****ing pussy.

That's all you really need to do and know. The internet. How to hold a 10 lbs hammer (many "men" here prove to me that this is a rare feat) and not be scared of your own ****ing shadow.

So... I guess you're right. Most people should just give up and not even try.

I mean, atilla hammer smithed a AKM in his mom's basement. Literally. And it's a damn nice rifle, too.

We should party in my mom's basement sometime soon.

I've been looking into this for a while now and have accrued a massive amount of resources and information...

Great place for Receivers... http://www.ohioordnanceworks.com/Firearms/OOWExclusiveFirearms/AKReceivers.cat
Great place for EVERYTHING else... http://ak-builder.com/index.php
Great video for building (guy is kinds weird, but seems to have a solid grasp on what he is doing... Also, Autofocus is insane for a bit, but the entire build part of the video is clear and not seizure-inducing Skip to 6:17 to avoid it.. haha)

Ok, so now you have to check into what you want and what the laws are... MA law says you need a Fixed Stock, No Bayonet Lug, and No Muzzle Brake*. Federal Law (922r) says you can have NO MORE than 10 import parts. On an AK this means you need 6 US domestic parts. Trigger groups usually can count as three of those, so plan on that. Also, the barrel you will get will almost definitely be domestic as well. So you're already at 4 922 compliant parts. Now choose a couple more... http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=166 ... Might I suggest the Gas Piston and Slant Brake*.

Building it... I'd say the best option for cost and learning would be to build one with somebody who already has and has the tools needed. Something like what happened here ---> http://www.northeastshooters.com/vb...d-Party-2013-is-FULL?highlight=ak+build+party ... (Which I'm hoping happens again as well) would be your best bet.

Hopefully that's enough info to get you obsessed like me HAHA
Also, listen to Atilla on getting spare rivets - short dough for insurance on building it in one try.

*Slant Brake is MA Legal if permanently attached (Weld, Solder, or Pinned)

my mom doesn't party with NEShomos though. well, she generously let flintoid and i drink and hammer a rifle in her basement, so to a certain extent she parties. just not with "regular" NESfolk.
