Well, I finally broke down (as many of you milsurp guys predicted I would!) and purchased my first AK. The WASR-10 was a steal that I couldn't resist - $295 with price, shipping and FFL total.

But more than that, I did the breakdown, cleaning and inspection, loaded a full box of Golden Tiger this morning, set up a target at 40 yards in the fresh snow, and let go a free standing barrage as quickly as I could attempt to establish sight picture. Eighteen made paper.

What a HOOT!

My first experience with the AK was OK! Thanks for looking

I have a Poly Tech that I've owned for years and a friend has a full auto thats unstoppable. He routinely dumps a drum magazine in a single burst. They're great fun and more accurate than most people give them credit for.

Yeah, I still have to bench shoot to see how accurate it really is. The bench seat was a little cold and wet this morning! But for free standing and rapid firing, the 6" group is accurate enough for Minute-of-Man in a must situation.

Also checked the handguard "heat" after 20 quick rounds, and it seems to be able to dissipate energy much better than an SKS.

thats about the high end they should be.....I have a poly tech sporter which I just love. Purchased many years ago with a free case of ammo , the two tin case ammo. dont see that any more!!!!
I tried some of the Wolf match 7.62 ammo in it and pulled of 4" 5 shot string @ 100y.
BUT these guns are for the cheap ammo fun shooting. I only wish we could still roll out tree stumps on the range and make tooth pics

Where did you find it $295 with shipping and ffl?

First, I didn't really think I would be buying an AK.

But I threw in a $260 low-ball bid on Gunbroker.... and it held up! $25 for shipping and my FFL really likes me at $10 per transfer. The cheapest that I've seen the WASR-10 lately are around $400. But keep an eye out, prices are coming down most everyday. There are some steals out there.

I'm sure it will be a real round burner, too.

That's a GREAT deal,for a fun rifle.
The AK (type) is a great therapy gun,you can't help but smile after shooting it.[smile]
p.s. It loves to be dropped in the snow & mud.

Got bored with it already.....

.... but just with the unfinished wood! [wink]

I disassembled, sanded, steel wooled, and the third coat of Mimwax Sedona Red #222 stain is drying by the woodstove as we speak. Five coats of Tung oil and this baby will look purdy.

And I'm glad they're all not under $300. My gun room would overfloweth.

Please post pictures when it's finished. I love before and after projects. And I especially love looking at purdy AK wood.

Will do.

Third coat of Tung oil is drying. I'm smoothing with steel wool between coats and will knock a very little of the last shine off with a scotchpad. Very impressed with the color.

Red Sedona does make for a great stain on Romanian AK stocks. I finished off my SAR1 with spray poly and went an extra step and buffed the bluing and crude machining marks off the bolt carrier for a more true AK look.

Noice.

Thanks guys,

It really does look better in real life than in the pics. I'll try to get some better shots on a sunny day.

I guess that I was equally impressed at how well the metal cleaned up. The rifle had the appearance of being stored for a lengthy period without any oil to protect it. It must've been in a dry place, since there was no rust, but there was a light and filmy oxidation over the entire surface. It took quite a bit of time with some oil and 0000 steel wool to get the oxidation off, followed up by a buff with a soft cloth that was slightly damp with Pledge. But you can see that the gun is much "blacker" where it should be in the after pics.

Don't sweat the metal finish. Romanian AKs have a crappy flat black done in the basement in a hurry look that often rusts. My SAR1 got a complete scrubbing and oil bath but to this day still gets some orange here and there.

Now we just need to get you a sling/bayonet package and some original Romi metal magazines. PM incoming.[wink]

This is turning into a great thread. Thanks for posting pictures everyone. Martin--it looks great, thanks for posting!
Now I have to post pictures of my Sar-1. It was refinished but not by me. The guy I bought it from is a woodworker. He did a nice job. I'll try to post pics tomorrow.

The Sedona Red was purely a coincidence. I just happened to have some on the shelf.

But the more I research, the more popular it seems to be. Very rich tone that absorbs well into the laminate and brings out the grain.

Ya, ya, ya, Ray!

Accessories forthcoming! I just need to play the 922r game, since the pistol grip is "C" stamped and the FCG and Mag are Tapco. Looking for the best USA made slant brake, any opinions? And I'll also have to replace one more part if I want to go with Romy steel mags. The Tapco gas piston sounds like it's the easiest.

And drat. The bayo lug has been ground off. Makes me ugly. [angry]

Yep. Sedona Red is what I used.
Here is a good work chart to help figure out what parts you my want to change to achieve compliance.
